Was looking for something to do between Phish shows, and my friend suggested this hike. Easy to get to, not crowded, cool temps. Trailhead was an unmarked dirt lot on the edge of Mountain Springs.

The first part of the hike is an occasionally steep climb up a dirt road to a radio tower, after which it mellows out and turns into single track. One last grunt on the way up to the ridge, where the views of nearby Potosi (still has snow!) and Charleston are outstanding, and the Panamints can even be seen off in the distance.

After the turnoff to Windy Peak, the views towards Red Rock Canyon started opening up. The trail got a lot more fun once we hit the sandstone, and the character of the place completely changed. Great view from the summit of downtown LV.

The return featured one decent climb, as the turnoff from the Mountain Springs ridge is actually higher than the Windy Peak summit.

Enjoyed this one. Probably not the most rewarding summit in the Red Rock Canyon area, but it's convenient and not crowded.

I go to Vegas every February for the annual Western Petroleum Marketers Association Conference. All I have to do is show up for the dinners and pretend to have fun, and my days are free to do whatever I want. My first hike on Monday was to the Rainbow Escarpment. I got a somewhat late start, as I had first stopped by the Pro fuel terminal on the opposite side of town to say Hi to the terminal employees and steal some hats. When I finally reached the trailhead it was very windy, and foggy. Luckily, the trail immediately starts climbing, which helped me warm up.

Views were very limited with the fog, so I was kind of bummed about that. Every so often I would catch a glimpse of the views below, but they never lasted for more than a few seconds. The geology in the area is fascinating, and the vegetation is different enough from the Sonoran desert to be interesting as well. The trail was enjoyable though, and I took some of the side trails for short distances, but since there were no views to be had in the fog, I didn't waste much time and decided to move on to another hike. I'll try this one again on a clearer day, and probably follow the ridge further north too.

Warm on the uphills, cold wind along the ridgeline.
The use trail is becoming more defined than ever, but I elected to select my own way down following an intermittent bighorn trail. Didn't see any bighorns, but lots of evidence of them once I started down.
Without trying I popped out right at Mountain Springs, a large complex. Ran across some old audits and also agave roasting pits near the springs.

Also came across a type of benchmark(?) I had never seen before - a County GPS Control Point. There sure are a lot of metal discs out there. :)

Always a good flow here. This is a large spring complex.
