| no partners | | | It was possible to take this canyon a bit further than was described in the guide. Having been here 3 other times before, we were determined to "find the ending point", which is often impossible. During the entire day, we needed to hike around at least 4 major waterfalls, some of which only had a trickle of water at this time of year. Each one is more impressive than the last. After 4.65 miles of walking up Bird Canyon, in addition to the ~2.2 miles to reach Bird canyon, we reached a Y-split. To save time getting back, and to be able to see the entire canyon, our goal was to hike out of Bird canyon and take the Esperero trail back down. We turned left at the Y-split and climbed up a very steep section to a high saddle. From this saddle we were surprised to see what we believe was either Cathedral Rock or Window Peak. The views were incredible for this point but we had only about 1 hour left of light and a very steep and possibly dangerous bushwhack down the side of Esperero canyon. Do not attempt this unless you are comfortable going down steep and gravelly slopes. Some areas needed to be spider crawled but we made it to the bottom just as it was getting dark. In a nice forested area, we were able to find the Esperero trail and followed it approximately 6 miles to get down. This part of the Esperero trail was excellent with soft dirt, not much rock and all downhill! Although it was a long difficult hike, the views and scenery in Bird Canyon were quite incredible. This is one of my favorite canyons hands down. |
