Quick hike up to the base of the summit slab of Unnamed Peak Contour 3772. Things seemed more green than the last time I was here a couple months ago. My route elevations went haywire around the base. Great views as always and a fun, steep hike.

Back in January of this year, a friend from Alaska was passing through, with her sled dog, Simba. I took her out to Grapevine Canyon to see the petroglyphs and the big boulders. Nice little hike. She'd had hip surgery two months before, so we didn't go far.

I saw the peak (Peak Contour 3772, I believe, from looking at a topo map just now) to the right from the parking lot and decided that was my target. After 0.3 miles of walking in the wash to the mouth of the canyon, I headed up and off trail to the right. There was a fairly discernible pathway to the ridge like feature, which I followed up and down for a bit. I was eyeing the large, white cliff like boulders in the drainage ahead (which can be seen from the parking lot), maybe a few hundred vertical feet beneath the peak. I made it there, which had great views back down drainage towards the parking area and Laughlin. Also of Lake Mohave to the east. I decided I should probably turn around at this point. It appeared like you could go up and around to the left, then back down a bit, then up to the base of the peak cliff faces, but kind of hard to tell until you encounter it. I would like to explore further next time. Made it back to the car for a 1.5 hour hike total, with one relatively minor directional mishap. Maybe it is time to invest in some sort of gps device?

Granite formations in all shapes and sizes, with caves, hoodoos, windows, and other features make the Bridge Canyon Wilderness a place you can keep going back to for exploration. Most people reach it via the better-known Grapevine Canyon, off of Christmas Tree Pass Road, but last Saturday my friends and I went in via Bridge Canyon Road. Best to have four wheel drive, or at least high clearance, for this road. Eventually you get to the edge of the wilderness area, and then continue on foot. (See GPS route.)

Once in the wilderness area, we did a road walk of a couple miles or so, taking a side hike up a little canyon with a trickling stream and little waterfalls (because of recent rains). We went back onto the road, walked a ways more, and then we started scrambling, exploring big piles of granite boulders. I realized I had been into one of the cave-like formations a couple of years ago, from a different direction. Every time we go out here we decide we have to come back to explore some more of the granite outcroppings.

On the GPS route, the drop-down menu for maps gives an option of a 1930 topo map. I was surprised to see that Spirit Mountain used to be called Dead Man Mountain. Same idea, I guess.

This area is higher in elevation than the surrounding desert. The flowers were just beginning to bloom. Saw a lot of yucca flowers

My birthday hike, with my daughter. After stopping to look at the petroglyphs (somewhat crowded with tourists), we went up as far as where it boxes up, with the little waterfall, which was trickling. Found out from some other hikers that it might be worthwhile to go up further. We started up, but decided we didn't want to do more this day. We watched for bighorns, but it was the wrong time of day.

At this elevation, back up in the canyon, another week or two should be better for flowers.

We hiked down Grapevine Canyon. This is the same Grapevine Canyon where the tourist hikers go to see all the petroglyphs, but we didn't go to that part. We hiked downstream instead of up. The canyon crosses the road and eventually runs into Lake Mohave (formerly known as the Colorado River.)

The weather was kind of chilly and quite windy. We wore jackets the whole time.

Very soon we ran into a vertical pour-off of at least 50 feet. My friends tried climbing up and around. For some reason, I was off my game today, and I elected to sit and wait, because I figured they'd come back. They did. We went around the other way (see track) and one of my friends did make it all the way to the bottom. I just wasn't up for it. It was really steep and slippery, a lot of decomposed granite. Rock handholds that broke off in your hand, stuff like that. I'm getting too old for this kind of shoeshine. I'm still glad I went.

Next step is to drive to a place called Nevada Telephone Cove, a nice big beach on Lake Mohave, and hike the same canyon upstream, to see if that pour-off can be reached, or if there are others blocking the way.

After hiking Sugarloaf, came back and picked up my wife for the next hike of the day. (Some people go to Laughlin to play the slots  .....what are they thinking :? ). This was the one trail that my wife had picked out that she wanted to try. This is an easy drive from Laughlin (15-20 minutes), easily accessible by all cars. Got there around 8am. Had the our choice of parking at the TH. First ones there. There's enough parking for 15+ cars. There are also bathrooms, but no running water. Short walk to the glyphs. About .25 miles. You can walk in the wash....very sandy, or take the south berm in to avoid the "beach effect." They do caution hikers not to touch or climb on the petroglyphs and there are some signed areas of revegetation....so Respect! That being said this is off trail hikers dream!! The glyphs are amazing, but the area around it, is just as amazing! We pretty much stayed on "trail" (a user trail) with the hope of getting into the spring. Just after the glyphs, we came across a seep that had water flowing for about 10 ft above ground before disappearing. Shortly after that, (about .5 miles in from the TH) came across another, slightly larger flow of water sandwiched between two giant boulders. We opted for the southern side and had, depending on who you asked (a neat little scramble to the top, or a terrifying climb where no person belonged). My wife, who had made it the top was a little freaked out by our position "wanted to get down." So we climb/slid back down to the canyon base. Upon reaching the base she tells me that she is still interested in venturing on. So we then CLIMBED UP the northern boulder. Mind you, the northern boulder was just as high off the ground as the other one, and our former position was such that we could have wrapped around an outcropping and been back on trail without any precarious boulder decent. On the other side of the boulders, we came to where this trail gets it name....grapevines! The grapevines Patchy as we continued up the canyon. But when they were present, they filled the canyon. When this happened, there were quite a few braiding paths that wound their way through them. So it wasn't that bad negotiating them. Unfortunately, we only made it in about 1.5 miles before we decided it was time to turn around. But we had a great time and my wife was a real trooper for going outside her comfort zone in hiking into the canyon. Views were incredible. Weather was just perfect. Saw a handful of lizards and chipmunks and also spooked a an owl from a thicket.

An interesting scramble through the boulders and hoodoos, mostly off-trail. (I switched designation from "canyoneering" to "hiking.") We didn't go there to view the petroglyphs, since we'd seen them before. A hiker could spend weeks exploring this area. We hiked up the main trail, which peters out eventually, then went up and around a hoodoo, and continued around to make a loop. (See route.)

Had heard and read good things about this little gem; it didn't disappoint. There are petroglyphs everywhere!!!

Easily accessible 2 miles of dirt road with my Honda Accord to the trailhead.

About a short 1/2 mile level hike to the mouth of the Canyon. Panels on both north and south sides. Few hundred yards in, you come to a 10' dryfall...it was easier for me to climb up and around the north side of the canyon bypassing this fall, but I didn't explore too much past that since Val stayed behind.

I spent most of my time climbing in and around looking for the rare find...next time (and I highly recommend) I will bring some binocs to search the varnished areas up and down the canyon before climbing up and finding nothing!!

As well, I'd like to hike all the way to Moss Spring...I'll be back to this area another day; hopefully, in February, it was PERFECT!!!

I met up with old friends from Springerville to visit the wonderful petroglyph panels off Christmas Tree Pass Road, which is to the northwest of Laughlin, Nevada. An easy hike, with loads of petroglyphs. Have to say, the canyon bears more exploring. I met a backpacker hiking out, and he indicated there is water up the canyon, and that it makes for a fine overnighter. No permits are needed as far as I could tell from the signs at the trailhead.

My friends and I are long time members of the Arizona Archaeological Society's Little Colorado River Chapter, based in Springerville, Arizona.

After playing on the side of Spirit Mountain, I saw the turn off for Grapevine. I wasnt expecting to hike, I was just looking for information on the hike. The sign says 1/4 to some petroglyphs. Short trail, so I decided to go for it. I was impressed, Some of the nicest petroglyphs I have ever seen. I didnt go into the canyon, as the hike shows on this site. I hiked along the cliffs where the petroglyphs where , searching for more petroglyphs in different areas.
