1st trip
I ran my 3rd 50 mile ultramarathon this weekend in Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains! It was definitely the most difficult one, and also the prettiest and ultimately most rewarding.

Started off with climbing up the Ray Miller trail with an old friend from high school. Stunning sunrise views over the pacific ocean and Channel Islands. Glorious.

Next up were 2 loops coming back to the same aid station. The first loop was also absolutely stunning often running along and well above the PCH and ocean. The second loop was most runnable out in the hills with a big climb at the end. I felt good through these parts.

Next was a longer segment of significant ups and downs out to Danielson Ranch. Parts of this were runnable and other parts very steep. I made good time but did get warm and a bit dehydrated near the end

Took a little time at Danielson Ranch to rehydrate then set off on long 10 mile segment that included a big nearly 3000 foot climb. I just hiked all of this, perhaps too aggressively as I would later find out. Started cramping near the top of the climb and the runnable flat upper part. The scenery of the Santa Monica Mountains along this segment was 10/10 though so that helped motivate me to keep moving. Saw my friend as I descended to the mile 33 aid and she gave me some salt pills to help with the cramping and life savers because yum life savers.

At Yerb Buena mile 33 aid, I had beat the cut off by an hour so I was happy but also concerned as I did not have much of a cushion and the cramping was debilitating when it happened. I set out on the longest stretch of the day - 12 miles - mostly downhill but with still about 800 feet of climbing along the way. I ran the downhill decently for a while but it all caught up with me around mile 40 or so, and I started getting passed by other runners more and more often. Again, the scenery was majestic though, especially at sunset. Wow. Just fabulous. In good spirits despite my deterioration I just kept moving to the best of my ability.

Hit the last 44.5 mile aid in full darkness. 5 miles remained. 1000 feet up in 2.5 then the same down. Cramping set in again on the climb and when I hit the top and the final downhill, I discovered I had totally blown out my quads and could barely move! I shuffled down the best I could and was thrilled to finish in 13:20 having made up 40 minutes on the 1 hour cushion I had despite all my leg troubles over the last 17 miles. I will take it!

Michelle and Sierra were at the finish, which was amazing. I had the best weather you could ask for too. All in all, despite the pain and suffering, it was an amazing day I would not trade for the world :)
