Early morning hike in Sedona. This hike has been on my radar for quite awhile. Hiked part of it 3 years ago with Clif. With his recent passing it is a great way to remember him and to scratch an itch that has been bothering me for several years.

Got to the Yavapai TH just after 6am. Still dark out and I didn’t have a headlight or my gear in for the hike. :(. So I waited in the car for daylight. Got on the trail around 6:30. Went up to the Slim Shady via a combination Yavapai and Kaibab trail (both of which are very short trails). Took the Slim Shady south until it connected to Made in the Shade. The trail starts out by switchbacking gaining some elevation before turning south and paralleling the Slim Shady. The views were awesome to the east. The clouds provided a canvas for pinks, purples and greys framing Bell Rock by a rising sun. Made in the Shade held its elevation briefly before coming to some large gnarly boulders and doing a little more climbing. This ends up being the high point on the trail as it begins a gradual descent on its way to reconnect to the Slim Shady in the north. Briefly lost the trail at a large slab of rock. Trail appeared to hold its elevation and continue on to the south. I followed this user trail for a short time before determining that this was indeed a user trail. Returned to the large slab of rock and discovered sure enough that the Made in the Shade continued straight down from the rock. Shortly after that it reconnected to the Slim Shady. Took the Slim back to the TH. Great little loop. Enjoyed the Made in the Shade more than I thought I would. Nice combination of open views to the east and the south, mixed with the intimacy of trail hugging boulders and trees.
