I decided to do a morning summit of Mormon Mtn ahead of any monsoon storm development. It was raining at dawn with cloudy skies in the first few hours of the day which helped delay the onset of more serious convection. A little humid on the climb. Nice views over the lake, though it has lost quite a bit of its water since a few months ago.

The top of this mountain is a real treat. I headed over to Tower Tank before hitting the high point. From there I decided to attempt a descent off the north slope, which by all map observations would be very steep. After a very enjoyable and picturesque stroll through the summit aspen groves, I happened upon an unexpected utility road.

Not sure when this was put in, but it was certainly not done by a wheeled vehicle. Only tracks could traverse a slope so steep. I found myself unable to stay on the track and had to make my own switchbacks to manage the grade. To be clear: I don't recommend this descent to anybody who thinks it's a quick-easy way down. It may be shorter, but it's so steep and loose it might take twice as long to descend it!

Once at the bottom on the AZT, it's a pleasant hike back to the trailhead. Water was flowing in the drainage below Mayflower Spring, so I hiked up to see the source. It started pouring less than 5 minutes after getting back to my truck, so timing worked out great.

Back in 2018, and as long as I can remember — I first moved to Arizona in 1984 — Mormon Lake has been dry. wo weeks ago, azbackpackr, posted [ photoset ] of a full Ashurst Lake. Bingo. Great idea!

My plan was to do a rough figure-8, taking in Ashurst Lake, Coconino Lake, Breezy Lake, Boot Lake, Unit East Tank, Replacement Tank, Long Lake and Indian Lake.

I was expecting to ride old jeep trail along the east shore of Ashurst Lake, but I was not expecting to barely be able to detect it. It set the theme for my day.

I rode FR 9118J to Coconino Lake. A fuel-powered external pump was loudly draining the lake, feeding water into the creek which drains into Ashurst Lake. I thought there would be a jeep trail across the top of the dam, and down the spillway, but there wasn’t. I walked my bike back to FR 82.

In ⅔ mile, I split left onto FR 9485E, which I stayed on the next 3⅓ miles to Boot Lake. FR 9485E became rough & rocky. I spotted a vehicle’s plastic bumper cover above Breezy Lake’s tiny remaining wet spot. The roughness of the road makes the three shallow climbs much more difficult than they would be on even decent dirt. I never fell, but I freely admit to dabbing on several occasions.

From the first gate, FR 9485E descends 50 ft. in ¾ mile to Boot Lake. First through juniper and pinyon; small pine nearer Boot Lake. The second gate is just above Boot Lake, which had plenty of water, but appeared pretty shallow.

The National Park Service hike difficulty formula is √(AEG * 2 * miles) = rating. https://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/ ... iculty.htm For example, a 10-mile hike with 2,200 ft. of accumulated elevation gain would have a difficulty of √(2200 * 2 * 10) = 209.8. The formula does not take into account elevation where the hike starts, or reaches its maximum. Nor does it calculate weather or difficulty of the surface. My planned route was rated 104.3, but I did not relish looping around Boot Lake, or diverting to the other lakes and tanks, on likely even worse jeep trails. I decided to bail.

I walked, off and on, about half the 3⅓ miles back to the powerline. at the powerline, rather than continuing on to FR 82, I turned right up FR 9118W, the powerline road. The 1⅔ mile section of FR 9118W wasn’t bad at all. I never did spot FR 9118V to Long Lake, affirming my decision to bail. The descent to the corral at FR 740 was quite rocky, but I rode it all the way.

From the corral, it was just a mile back to my waiting wife.

My recommendation: Avoid riding FR 9485E.

Crownleaf evening primrose obvious even driving in. Rocky mountain iris below Coconino Dam. Scattered fleabane. Good patch of silky sophora (just above normal elevation limit of 7000 ft.). A few paintbrush. Nothing else really worth mentioning.

I had never been to Ashurst Lake before, so I decided to take my kayak and mountain bike for a little two-night car camp there. I paddled around the lake and rode my bike out to Anderson Mesa (the GPS route is included.) I enjoyed it, especially the bike rides. The lake is a bit small for paddling, but it was fun anyway. Saw osprey, great blue heron, but no bald eagles. I was told there is a nesting pair there.

As usual, I had campfires in the very early morning, but not at night. I enjoy watching the sky lighten up and the sun rise while drinking my coffee. It rained a bit Sunday and Monday. I left Tuesday morning.

Decided to camp at Ashurst lake for the weekend, arriving around 11pm on Friday night. Friday night was a pleasant temperature with little wind.

After waking up Saturday, we took a ~8 mile off-trail hike from the campground to see nearby Indian Lake and Ducksnest Lake in a big loop. Although both lakes were dry, it was a nice hike. Stormy skies above the volcanic prairie with mountains around made for a beautiful and awesome backdrop. We were also lucky enough to see a herd of Antelope from a distance near Ducksnest Lake. Saturday evening was colder and quite a bit windier, but comfortable with a fire.

Sunday morning gave us a really nice surprise, with a layer of snow all around us. Waking up to the snow among the junipers next to the lake was great. After a muddy packing-up, we hit the road and drove back to Phoenix through Sedona. The rain and mist in the red rocks was a highlight of the drive home.

we headed up to ashurst lake on friday afternoon. we got our favorite spot (#1) at forked pine campground. it's amazing how much prices have risen there but they still don't have additional amenities. $18 per night and no flush toilets, solar lights in the bathroom, or showers, which you get at organ pipe cactus national monument for $16 per night. seems a ripoff... but, we do love vic, our camp host. and we love to fish here. we pay extra to walk just a few feet from our tent to the lake shore. we got rained on in the middle of the night on saturday night, and didn't have any real weather otherwise until we were on our way home. the water is so high this year, too. we caught four on saturday and three on sunday. but you should've seen the one that got away... it was soooo big - biggest i've ever seen outside the hatchery. it took my hook with it.

another hot one in the valley, and yet another reason to like phoenix: all of the glorious ways to get out of town. it is ALWAYS windy at ashurst lake - no exception. but we like it. we can camp within steps of fishing, and sometimes the fishing is good. and man the fishing was good! :y: we fished in the evening right before sundown, and then in the morning before 9. we caught four big ones (12-13.5 inches long) in the evening, and four in the morning before calling it quits since bobby didn't need any more fish he didn't want to clean/cook/eat. we headed up to flagstaff before heading back to the valley - had a couple of oh so yummy clear creek sandwiches.

ashurst lake is almost always windy, but we have luck there occasionally, so it's still on the list. besides, we like to camp at forked pine campground, where vic, the camp host, always remembers both of our names. we set up the tent and then it rained for a bit, so we sat in the truck and waited it out. the sun came out and the wind died down about an hour before sunset, so we walked out to go fishing. bobby caught three good sized trout and a pike (which we left out for the birds). i caught two small trout that we let live. it was hard to come in the fishing was so good, but the light was dying on us. in the morning, the wind had come back, but the fishing was still good. we caught one ample sized trout each, then the cold wind was telling us to pack up and head out. we had breakfast at the place in flagstaff, before heading down the road to montezuma well and montezuma castle on our way back to the phoenix area.

Spent the night in the (not yet officially open for the season) Forked Pine campground, then fished in the morning. Slow at first, then three bites quickly in succession and then two nice holdover rainbows (14" and 15") one right after the other. Slowed down again after that so we decided to move on towards Flagstaff.

part 3 of staying cool did just that. the wind died down around sundown - and then it started to cool down in a major way. i think the low was around 35 or so here. my main aim for the weekend was to get away from the valley, though, into the cooler climes. nice little lake. i was beginning to think that i was bad luck for southpawaz's fishing though, until he caught two large rainbow trout right in a row in the morning.
