| partners | | We got started around 0730 to nice cool temps. Decided to do the loop counter-clockwise. Passed the old cabin ruins between 1.00-1.50 miles in. Saw at least 6 or 7 old homesites, but I think there are more nearby. The kids liked the story of how 3 women got murdered at one of the sites. They suggested a Halloween hike would be a good idea. After that, we continued west, eventually reaching the eastern slope of Ecks, which is the only real elevation gain of the hike. We switchbacked up, then contoured south. At the southern end, just before the trail starts to drop again, we headed west, offtrail for a very short distance, then got on the road that leads to the summit. It curves back north on the western side of the mountain, then turns east for a steep final ascent to the top. It was a little early, but we had lunch up there, then headed back down, retracing our steps to where we had initially left the trail. From there, we switchbacked down the south slope, then headed east to complete the loop, finishing up around 1330. Nice day, and good to be about 30 degrees cooler than Phoenix. The trail is in very good shape, and is easy to follow. Not the most exciting hike, but nice to do every so often. Good easy mileage for the kids, and this was my son’s longest hike to date. |
