HAZ's lead GE voyeur Eric (@ssk44) told me about an interesting looking ruin he spotted NE of Globe. It's near a neat butte-top ruin he and Hank and visited two years ago [ Corral Ruins ] they called Corral Ruins. Eric also told me there was another nearby butte they'd been curious about that we could probably include. All together it wouldn't be too much walking so my wife Catherine and I figured maybe we could see all three.

The ruin above Winters Ranch was a short walk off the dirt road. The satellite view shows it to be big (I'd guess 50+ rooms) and indeed it is. Not that much to see though - collapsed of course but there wasn't much to find. I didn't see more than 5 or 6 pottery pieces, maybe archaeologists did a complete surface collection. From this nice open hilltop though the nearby buttes we wanted to visit next were easy to see. Either these guys were neighbors or the hill and butte sites represented a shift from secure to insecure living conditions for a single group.

We did the short drive around to the Corral Ruin starting point and used the Eric/Hank gps route. (BTW it wouldn't be hard to walk directly between these sites, but car logistics would be harder.) Nice (mainly) ridge walk in open country with a scramble at the end to gain the top. Lots of collapsed rooms on top indicating habitation. Again not too much pottery - didn't see anything very interesting (though Eric and Hank found a couple pieces based on their pictures).

We then continued on to the "mystery butte" (4805). Catherine stayed in the lead and found a steep break on the left side that led to the top. She spotted a fox on top, then saw it again (after it had gone over the side) or saw a second. I can only attest to seeing (separately) two bushy tails bouncing through the underbrush. Unfortunately no cultural treasures on top - just a minor rock arrangement that was not natural. Anyway a mystery no more.

The long way home...

My good friend Hank joined me on this one. We started planning this trip about a month ago. For various reasons, It kept getting pushed out. This trip had special meaning for me. It's been about ten years in the making. This butte has been calling me every time I drive along the highway between Globe and Salt River Canyon. It can be clearly seen from both directions. It just captivates me. I've always wondered if their were ruins out there. Its funny. I actually just today came to the realization that this is really where it all started for me. This butte is what first fueled my early thirst for obscure ruin hunting. The sense of adventure. The unknown.

Satellite imagery was barely usable back then. Subtle sites just didn't show up well. I thought to look again about a year ago after driving home from the White Mountains. That butte was still calling. Well, well, well. What do we have hear. My original gut feeling was starting to look like a reality. It was still subtle but the outlines were visible. Image data over the last four years has gotten much better. It was time to finally walk out there and take a look. I'm amazed its taken this long. My original assessment was maybe 8-10 rooms. That's a big site for a butte. What we found was far better. The entire butte was covered with rooms. 13-15 is a good rough guess. The more you looked, the more you found. Pottery shards (sherds to be more technical) of varying size were everywhere. We found extensive ground metate's. Some were amazingly large and deep. This ruin is actually the biggest butte site I've explored. This site was clearly home to a large community for many years. It's hard to imagine what that would have looked like. Families were raised on that butte. Amazing.

Talk about coming full circle. The long way home. At this point in my life, the timing was perfect. Yesterday was special. Thanks for coming Hank. It wouldn’t have been the same without you.

Eric

AKA- Corral Creek Butte RUINS 4910ft

Another rewarding, scenic, off-trail hike to a lesser known ancient Native American Ruins Site find by our
HAZ-ssk44.

This one had been on my back burner for a few months since learning of Eric's interest in us day hiking it back in Sept'17. I do appreciate his patience while I worked it into my so busy (lol) retirement schedule with juggling all my various doctor appointments, weekly errands, and out-of-state family visits between October through December'17 :)

It was a beautiful blue sky day with above average temps in the 60's for a January off-trail hike starting at 4640ft elevation. Our Park/TH Start was a little sketchy and noisy for only one vehicle just off the pavement of Hwy 60 North [ photo ] which also included a starting wakeup section of catclaw Acacia + a rather high ranching fence that we needed to go under, not over, but just a minor inconvenience for a short distance before things opened-up and all was good again. There were signs of previous cattle in the area but not any evidence recently and their previous presence included a rather nicely laid-out hiking route from close to our TH Start most all the way to our planned destination [ photo ]

The surrounding scenery and easy to moderate off-trail hiking was quite pleasant in this border section of the Tonto NF with excellent views into the adjacent San Carlos Indian Reservation land.

My posted picset with captions and recommended GPS Hiking Route hopefully confirm our "thumbs-up" hiking day which also included an ending, satisfying stop at the newly remodeled, new ownership Mexican Food Restaurant in Globe- :next: J&R El Rey Cafe Reynoso's - Globe, AZ igallery/image_page.php?id=5410 :D
