| no partners | | I had done this trail several times in the past, but it really had been several years. I was pretty excited to get back out there. I always feel weird posting 4x4 trips on a hiking board, but since this trail is listed... We had 3 rigs, which is just about right 3-4 is perfect. I still remember when this was "upper woodpecker"
I remember hearing the chatter about how the mining company graded a road to the now active mine out there and that they had destroyed most of the trail. I will say that the first 2/3 does still have the graded road running trough it, but pretty much all the obstacles are still there. In a few places the road actually leaves the original route and then re-joins it here and there. The last 1/3 is untouched and pretty much as I remember it. You will for sure need high clearance and 4wd and expect to take some scrapes here and there from the rocks.
We did this in 3-4 hours, taking breaks, chatting, eating lunch. Saw no one on the trail itself, saw a few on Ajax mine road, and then saw more on the road out to US60. Mostly people coming and going from Box Canyon. I'm not certain, but I feel like this trail gets less use than in the past. My buddy's wanted to continue on the Highway to Hell, I know better and passed and turns out they did too! These days I don't get as many pictures, but I did shoot plenty of video.
