We were up bright and early on our second day, drove the mile or so to the trailhead and were soon heading up the old Jeep trail. If you read the hike description it covers the basics of the route. Basically the old Jeep trail covered the whole gamut... rocky, loose, stable, steep & flat.
We deviated from the description by continuing on the road well past Cow Flat Tank, all the while eyeing possible routes up to the ridge of Cow Flat Mountain. After turning around we chose what appeared to be an easy route and began the climb to the saddle. All we had to do was follow cow paths and soon we were there. For the best views to the east, this is the time to take a quick detour to the viewpoint.
From the saddle it was a matter of choosing the most open areas while continuing in a lazy arc to the summit. Not much for scenic views from the summit, just to the west.
We backtracked pretty close to the same route on the return trip. When we got back to the car we decided to see what was up a very faint old track. It turned out to be a mining area so we did as much exploring as practicable due to some heavy interlocking thickets of cat's-claw.
