Went CCW on the Snake Trail then Az Cyrpress and then back on the Anaconda. These trails, I believe, are newer additions to the Sedona trail system. The Snake Trail is not even in HAZ yet. I have hiked this trail on numerous occasions gathering data for a trail description....which is still in the works. Basically this is a nice short trail, only about .5 miles in length, ideal for this loop. It drops down into a wash. Buffeted by a wash slope on one side and a prominent hill to the south. When I got to the Cypress Trail I first headed north first, (doing a simple loop would take you in a southward direction), just to see where it starts. It's only about .15miles to the the TH Unfortunately the TH has been commandeered by gun enthusiasts so the last two days that I've hiked this area I've been serenaded by gun shots. I swear today they were firing a howitzer. The AZ Cypress is a fairly flat trail, sandy in spots, but pretty nice for jogging. It crosses a rocky wash at one point, and for the entire time I was on it, it skirted the west side of the hill. As with mountains, hills can be deceiving in size. I was surprised at how much real estate was taken up by this hill. Anaconda is a well named trail. From the AZ Cypress it starts a serpentine path up the southwest side of the hill I had been circling. The slope and the climb is very gradual, but definitely uphill in nature. The trail is composed of child like fist sized rocks. Not ankle busters, but not ideal for running. I was surprised at the perceived elevation that was achieved. I say perceived, because the elevation is as much from the climb that I did as from the terrain falling away from the hill (the hill has quite a few washes surroinding it). From the top you get a pretty good view of the surrounding area. I haven't done all the trails in this area yet, but of the ones that I've done, this would be my choice to get a lay of the land. Note: you have Thunder Mountain just to the north, but I'm not considering it part of this "trail system", (even though it is only a mile away). From the Anaconda, I took the Girdner and Chuckwagon back to the TH. Nice area to get a low impact work out and still get a little taste of Sedona. Besides for the shooters practicing with their canyon, I had the trails to myself. No wildlife (go figure) |
