This is a heavily populated but beautiful trail. It originates at the same parking lot as many other popular trails, so get there early if you want a spot. It's a huge lot, but still it does fill up unbelievably. There is also a shuttle bus stop at this trail head.

The first lake is nymph lake, the second is dream lake, and the last lake is emerald lake. The first lakes are actually much prettier than emerald lake, but I would still recommend going all the way to the end. The mountains surrounding emerald lake make it beautiful. Nymph lake has a lot of lily pads with big yellow blooms which were very neat to see. Dream lake is also very beautiful and clear.

You do lose some of the crowds as you keep hiking, but still there is a lot of people. The hike itself is easy. Easy in difficulty, easy to navigate, a large wide walking trail to support the many people in RMNP!

This is a beautiful hike in a sea of beautiful hikes! 😂😂 Still I would recommend it, and the earlier, the better!

Wow, what a gorgeous trail. It’s easy to see why it’s so popular. Emerald Lake was super windy and cold but I didn’t care.

We were fortunate to even get into the park at all, and were only able to get a pass for the earliest time of day. It worked out since we were headed to the Alpine Visitor Center afterward, and then all the way to Pagosa Springs to camp. Barely made it before dark. Big day.

A big loop starting at Bear Lake TH. 4:40 am arrival at parking lot since I wasn’t able to get timed entry, but having an early start was kind of nice. Up to Alberta Falls, Mills, the Loch, Glass, and Sky Pond, then over to Haiyaya, Emerald, Dream, Nymph,

Back in the west at Rocky Mountain National Park. The first day of hiking was around Bear Lake, to Loch Lake (The Loch), Lake of Glass, Haiyaha Lake, Dream Lake and return to Bear Lake. Beautiful scenery all along these trails and the Aspen were at Peak color change. There were plenty of others along the trail but not overcrowded. The higher elevation made the hiking a little more difficult but not bad since we were only around 10,000 feet. The weather was ideal and very little snow on the surrounding peaks except on north slopes. Looks like a late arrival for winter this year.

The trails were in good condition as usual in a park that has heavy usage. The trail from the Loch to Glass Lake was a little rockier with a lot of rock steps that made this section a little harder than the rest. I could spend another day or two in this area to hit some of the other trails near Bear Lake. At the time we went the park required reservations to enter the park, this supposedly ends on October 10.

i had done this hike with my mom on a previous visit many years ago
popular for a reason - it's beautiful
we couldn't get to the bear lake corridor trails until 1300
sue had to get the entry ticket, since i could only get one pass per day
we ended up taking the shuttle, which was fine
more elevation gain than i remembered
nymph lake, dream lake, emerald lake and the loop around bear lake
good weather, cool temps late afternoon
several elk around dream lake, including a big buck
a little too close for comfort with a lot of people taking photos
fun hike if you don't mind the crowds

My first time visiting RMNP.Yeah! I parked at the Bear Lake trailhead. I started a little before daylight but would finish my hike here. That way I could still see Bear Lake. I took a connector trail over to Glacier Gorge trail. First stop was Alberta Falls. Cool waterfall. From there I worked my way up to The Loch, Timberline Falls, Lake of Glass and after a little scramble topped out at Sky Pond. I liked this trail along the creek and little meadows. I heard an Elk bugle and saw three of them. Also saw a few Pika's. On my way back down I took a connector trail over to Lake Haiyaha where there is a gnarly tree. After that I connected to Emerald Trail at Dream Lake. Went on up to Emerald Lake and turned around there. I saw one Marmot there. Headed back down this trail back past Dream Lake then Nymph Lake. It has lots of water lilies which is what the lake is named after. From there it was back down to Bear lake and the end of my loopish hike. Although these trails are popular I felt it was a good outing for my first hike in RMNP.I also saw a nice Bull Elk and a few Buck deer on the drive. Very enjoyable morning!

Starting from Bear Lake TH we had our snowshoes on the whole way up. Some people were just using microspikes but there was a lot of drop through in deeper areas.

Day 5
Trailhead elevation = 9,475‘ Max experienced elevation = 10,221’
After a Micky D’s breakfast we hit the trail at about sunrise. This was a hike composed of a hike to 2 lakes then a side hike to another. All three were very nice lakes.

Saw a juvenile wild turkey on the trail. Met some very friendly chipmunks along the way.

Merlin headed back to AZ this afternoon.

Bear Lake TH - Alberta Falls - Xjct - Mills Lake - Jewel Lake - back to Xjct - The Loch - Timberline Falls - Lake of Glass - Sky Pond - back to Xjct - Lake Haiyaha - Dream Lake - Emerald Lake - Dream Lake - Nymph Lake - Bear Lake TH. Distance and AEG approximate.

Glacier Gorge TH parking was already full shortly after 9am, so I went further to Bear Lake TH that still has plenty of parking spots. The trail was very busy up to Alberta Falls that had plenty of water and photographers, behind it trail usage significantly dropped. Went further up to get the views of Glacier Gorge. Turned left at X-junction to Mills Lake. There are new log bridges on stream crossings along this trail. Trail along Mills Lake provides a lot of spaces along the shore to sit, relax and admire the views especially if the light is good. Saw some from-the-shore fishermen and a walk-in one. Went a little further to Jewel Lake then turned back.
Another left turn at X-junction and the trail steadily ascends along the stream with 4 switchbacks until it reaches The Loch. Turned right at the fork (left branch is a dead end at Loch's mouth), went around The Loch noticing some picnicking groups ashore and inflatable-boating fishermen afloat.
Further up the trail again follows the stream, crosses another stream at which there's a junction to Andrews Glacier. At Timberline Falls the trail steeply ascends to the falls and enters the side stream of it - you actually need to climb through the falls, but it's non-technical and very short. Just above the falls lies Lake of Glass making a good views downstream from it's other side. Sky Pond, the end point of this trail, is just behind Lake of Glass.
While I was accumulating elevation gain going up to Sky Pond, heavy clouds accumulated in the sky. When I was finishing my lunch, Fisherman & Son were running around the Pond probably bringing some Big Fish to bay, the rain began. Upon reaching the falls I found that trail stream was stronger and had a sloppy experience climbing down wet rocks. Then I decided to skip Andrews Glacier branch because I felt running out of time though initially it was on plan.
At X-junction I turned left once again and proceeded to Lake Haiyaha accompanied by intermittent rain. Trail goes downhill for a little while and then it's all uphill. Lake Haiyaha partly covers a depression filled with huge angular boulders, so you need to cross the boulder filed to get to the lake. Didn't notice any fishermen on this one, but they were probably there hiding between boulders.
Having descended to Dream Lake, I found a group of picnickers swept from the shore by another rain blast. Well I'm not that easy and all wet anyway, so I went up to Emerald Lake, made an internal checkmark and headed down. Halfway between Dream and Nymph lakes I caught up with due ragazze belle with who I kept company to the trailhead. I got so carried away describing beauty of Yellowstone park to these nymphs that I didn't even notice Nymph Lake that we were passing by. But it was still raining and I already had an impression that for some unknown reason lakes lit by the sun look much better than same lakes in the rain, so I don't regret about it. This can also be a reason to come back.

Karen's first trip west of the Mississippi started with a plane flight to Denver and a short trip to Estes Park, where we stayed in a tiny cabin next to the river. :) Our first day would be through Rocky Mountain National Park on our way through the state in an 8 day loop that would be mostly new ground for me as well.
We entered the park, with killer views of snow-capped Longs Peak in the distance, and she was blown away. The air was cool and the visibility was incredible as we parked at the Bear Lake Trailhead and started up. At .5 Nymph Lake appeared, it's surface like glass, then at 1.1 came Dream Lake, equally picture-perfect. Finally at 1.8 we reached Emerald Lake, which, depending on the time of day, is exactly that. My pictures do no justice.
We headed back and hit the road, having a snowball fight in July at one of the high passes.
Not bad for Day One.
