I have never been on this part of the Alpine Loop. Its a nice short drive, with great views. The pup and I stopped at Sound Democrat Mill at the bottom of Placer Gulch. There is a self guided tour of the Mill.

After stopping at Animas Forks and the Sound Democrat Mill, Paul and I continued the drive up Placer and then down Picayune for a nice dramatic loop. Very steep coming back down Picayune to the main road back to Silverton. As always, tons of interesting old mining stuff to see. :D

This was part of a day of exploring with friend Paul, who is a big fan of the history of the old mines, etc. in Colorado, especially the San Juan Mountains. He used to tell me that since I was a Democrat, I should visit the Sound Democrat mine. Turns out I had driven by it in 2013, but wasn't sure which one it was at the time. So, after touring Animas Forks, we headed over to it. It's fun to have Paul along on these kind of adventures, since he is always providing interesting tidbits of history along the way.

I used to be a Sound Democrat, but since Democrats are just Wall Street Republican light, I am a left of Bernie Democratic Socialist.

The first two days of this Colorado trip went according to the script. Two nights in a Durango motel with a train ride to Silverton in between. After that, well the plan was subject to change. Lots of four wheeling that took longer than expected. This meant my rough idea about how far I would travel the next couple of days wouldn't match the reality of the situation. But it was alright, since I still was able to pull it off (mostly) by just making necessary adjustments and driving longer distances. So what else is new?

After spending an unplanned night in a motel in Ouray, it was off to try to at least make it to somewhere in New Mexico on my way back home. I had planned on heading for Engineer Pass by way of a 4x4 road out of the Ouray area, but that only worked for about a mile and a half off of US550 when I reached a spot in the road that I couldn't navigate past in the truck due to wet slick conditions. So I had to backtrack out and go to Silverton to continue the planned route. Okay, this was going to be a long day! Didn't care as it was all about the photos anyway. :)

I had been through Animas Forks a number of times before, but this time I wanted to look around a bit. After checking out some of the buildings in the old town site I drove up into Placer Gulch aways, before continuing on my journey to Engineer Pass and beyond (Lake City, Creede, Wolf Creek Pass, Pagosa Springs, and Chama).

Yep, it was another looong, but very good day on the road! :D
