Workout hike up and down Mickinnick Trail. Nothing exciting, but it’s a solid workout very nearby. Trail is a little rocky in places, which slowed the descent slightly. Very warm and humid today, was drenched within the first mile, but kept slogging uphill. Nice views from the benches at the top of the trail. Scrambled to the rocks above as well. Saw at least 7-8 hikers on my ascent, but only 2 hikers on my way back down.

Plenty of flowers most of the way. Huckleberries ripe along the top mile.

Opted for something nearby since Wyatt wanted to skip hiking today, and we have afternoon plans. This hike is just on the northeast side of town, about three miles from the house we’re renting. One other car at the trailhead when I started.

First third of a mile was flat, then the next couple of miles were steep. Generally good trail surface, but rockier than yesterday’s hike. The upper half of the trail has a lot of bare granite, which is fine when dry, but would require caution when wet. Nice views all the way up. The forest is a little less dense, which makes it warmer, but does allow the better views. Winding among the granite boulders was nice too.

The trail leveled off somewhat near the top and the last half mile was pretty easy. There are two benches at the end of the official trail, and a large granite outcropping with better views. My mileage seemed a little low at this point, but it was definitely the end of the official trail. I followed a use trail up through the granite boulders above and after some easy scrambling, found another granite outcropping with some cairns on it and better views of the river to the south.

The hike back down was easy. While I only saw two other hikers on my way up, I saw at least a dozen on my way down, including one guy I saw on yesterday’s hike. We chatted for a moment as I was finishing up. Nice hike for being so close to town, but it wasn’t overly exciting. If I lived nearby, it would be on the occasional rotation of local workout hikes, but not at the top of the list.
