Second hike of the day. We drove thru Wallace then parked at the trailhead at the south edge of town. Pulaski is always a popular trail, and we saw plenty of other hikers. Pleasant hike thru the forest, with placards giving the history of the trail along the way. At the tunnel, we climbed down to the entrance for a better look inside. Easy hike back down to the trailhead.

This was hike 2 of the day to check out an historical area. This is the site of the Great fire of 1910 burning about 3 million acres. Edward Pulaski led his 45 men, 2 miles upstream, to take refuge in a mine.

This was the only trail all week that we saw more than a handful of people. The entire trail follows next to the West Fork of Placer Creek and terminates at the abandoned mine. It is cut through thick old growth forest with informational signs throughout.

second hike for the day
we drove into wallace to hike the tunnel trail
a lot of history about the big fire in 1910 and ed pulaski, who led 45 firefighters to safety in the mine
good trail going up to the tunnel along the west fork of placer creek
can't imagine running down the creek to escape the fire - off trail would be brutal
we took a look at the gated tunnel then retraced our steps
interesting tribute - well done

Beautiful day in northern Idaho and a great day for the Pulaski Tunnel Trail. Stream was flowing nicely and the trail was relatively busy. Good trail conditions - and the historical signage along the way is in good shape.

Quick hike while everyone else was still sleeping. Easy hike, the trail is in excellent shape. No views since you’re down in a canyon surrounded by trees. At the end, crossed the creek over to the tunnel entrance, which is barred to prevent access. Steep drop down to the creek there, but was able to hold onto branches to keep from sliding. Cool, but humid. Did not see anyone else.

Cool & cloudy when we started, but no rain. The trail was still soaked from the rain yesterday though. Easy hike uphill along West Fork Placer Creek, and beautiful scenery. There were a lot of signs along the trail that explained the events from the Great Fire of August 1910. Very interesting history, and I’m surprised a movie hasn’t been made about it. Or maybe one has and I just don’t know it because I rarely watch movies.

The second half of the trail is a little steeper, but still pretty easy. Seeing the tunnel at the end was sobering, and with as green as the mountainsides were today, it was hard to imagine a fire raging through them. Easy hike back down, and we passed several hikers. Obviously a popular trail in the area, and it’s best to get an early start for good parking.
