| no partners | | Day 4 of my White Mountains Trip. I've been eyeing this little mountain for awhile and since the weather was still being unstable, I decided to go for it. Easy off-trail and the views going up were pretty nice. Almost to the top and I suddenly end up on a badger hole's front porch. I didn't see it, but the hole was pretty fresh, so I'm sure it's in use. I left in a hurry as I didn't need the homeowner attacking me as a trespasser. Got to the top of the ridgeline and followed the ridgeline around. Nice views as I went along. The high point is in a grove of Pine and Aspen so there would be no views from there. But who doesn't love Aspen? When I reached the trees, there was quite a bit of deadfall. The high point was close though and just going a bit to my right and about 100 feet in, took me right to the high point cairn that someone had built. After taking a photo of the cairn, I angled back around some deadfall and found some clear sailing out of the grove. I was now on the ridgeline I was going to take down to make a loop out of this. Before I did, I had to marvel at a tree that I dubbed an Octopus. A lot of "arms" going on there. Down the ridge I went, back to the road. I spent a little time in an Aspen Grove there before walking the road back to the truck. After I got back to the truck, I took some carrots out to the resident ranch horses in the meadow by where I parked. They were there the last two times I've been up here, so this time I brought them a treat.
Nice little Hike, I may do this one again for a short excursion and a warm-up on an arrival day. I'd really like to see Mr. Badger, but not at his front door. I talked to some Fish and Game guys and they said there were probably Long-tailed Weasels up there too. |
