The unpaved road to the TH was a bit rough, but an SUV with good tires could probably get to the TH; however, a 4WD vehicle would be a safer choice.
The hike up on the service road wasn't too exciting -- it was steep and the desert was kind of drab, so there wasn't much to look at. Things picked up once I got to the communication towers -- from there you take an easy-to-follow use trail along a ridgeline to the summit. There is a joshua tree forest along the way, which is neat to look at, and the views of Lake Havasu are cool. There are some nice 360 degree views at the summit, so we hung out there for a bit. The hike up was a bit warm, but it was much cooler at the summit -- I probably would have put on a windbreaker if I had brought one.
The descent was better because you had views of Lake Havasu all the way down. The road was steep and with loose dirt on the road it was a bit slippery when hiking down.
I liked this hike and I'd do it again if I was in the Lake Havasu area. However, I imagine that non-peakbaggers would not justify driving a long way to get there for such a short hike. |
