Easy hike for the first mile, with plenty of shade and cool temps. The cliffs above the trail near the beginning were nice, and the talus slope must either hold water or have some voids, because cold air was coming out of the rocks in that section.
Very steep second mile to the lake. Nobody slipped, but I held onto tree roots and branches to help one kid through the steepest parts. Flowing water in the creek, which crossed the trail at one point. Despite the recent dry weather, there were plenty of wildflowers.
Looked like one group camping at the beach, and I'm guessing they arrived in one of the boats in the small bay. Maiden Rock was photogenic. The kids played in the water while we took a break and watched some seaplanes land to the south of us.
Easy hike back out, the steep sections weren't too bad going uphill. Saw one large group of teenagers backpacking in. They were carrying watermelons, I'd have liked to see them carry those through the steep parts. Finished up around lunchtime, but it was still pretty cool weather today. Nice hike, definitely one I'd consider doing again on a future trip. |
