Camped at the trailhead to get a very early start. Steep route up this rocky mountain, over a mile of elevation gain. Short section of scramble with steep slopes.

This state highpoint has been on my radar screen for a while, so I decided that now was as good a time as any to do it.

I started at 5:00 AM and was hiking in the dark(with a headlamp) for about 1.5 hours. It was a good thing that I started in the dark, if I could have looked out ahead and seen how steep it was I might have gotten discouraged and turned around!

The first 3 miles were steep -- gaining about 4,000 feet in elevation -- but it was mostly class 1 hiking.

Chicken Out Ridge(COR) was a rush. I stayed a little too high once I got past the notch that takes you up to COR -- there was a bit of exposure along with a couple of awkward moves, but the rock was really solid. Once I got to the white gully and climbed up to where the 20 foot vertical downclimb is, I decided that I really didn't want to go down that. So I descended about 2/3 of the way from the top of the white gully down towards the trail, and traversed a bit to another gully and took that up to the saddle at the bottom of the 20 foot downclimb.

The last half mile or so to the summit was pretty steep over a lot of scree and talus, so the going for me was slow.

There were great views at the top, so I hung out at the top for a bit.

Once I got back to COR, I climbed up the near vertical 20 foot wall. The rock was solid and grippy, and handholds/footholds were plentiful and good. I think that I took a better route back going back to the notch that you off of COR.

The descent from COR was steep and tough on you quads and knees. I was sure glad that I had trekking poles on the descent.

This might be the toughest sub-10 mile hike that I have done. I would love to hike COR again as soon as tomorrow, but I am not eager to hike the 3 miles up and down from the TH to COR anytime soon.

Mt. Borah to Chicken out Ridge: Belinda, Kevin and Kim camped at the TH the night before for a 0500 start time. Ugh. When I found out about the 20’ vertical wall, I decided that I wouldn’t be able to climb that with Rudy. So we stayed at our original camp and had a much more reasonable start time.

This hike is a pumpkin kicker from the get go. Relentless elevation gain starting at about 7000’. Luckily it had rain the previous two days so the well used trail wasn’t slippery. I really think the most difficult part of this is the decent, two days later, I am still sore.

Highly recommend if you’re in the area, or doing high points.
