Early morning hike in the Rimrock area. Wanted something close and short and there were some use trails in the system that I wanted to follow. Got to the Glenforest TH around 7am. Took the Cedar Knoll into the Sunset Loop and then followed the southern branch of the Sunset. Took that in about .3 miles to get to the use trail that takes off to the north. It crosses the northern arm of the Sunset and then proceeds to descend from a rocky bluff. Up until the descent, the trail had been as smooth as any of the official trails. The descent was a bit rocky and badly eroded in spots. Once it leveled out it returned to a nice smooth trail. The trail junctures with where the Golden Gulch Trail starts. Took the Golden Gulch back up to the plateau, connected to the Bull Pasture and then followed a forest road back to the TH.

Easy hike. Nothing great about this system except access. The Golden Gulch is probably the most unique of the trails. Chilly hike. Temps in the 40’s. Luckily, no wind today. Encountered 2 hikers. Wildlife included a rabbit and 3 deer.

This was a repeat of a hike I did several years ago. I did this trail back in 21 to do a description of it and never did. I returned today to finish what I started. In my mind, the best way to do this trail is from the ForestGlen TH. This involves an additional .72 miles to get to the Golden Gulch, but the trails in the area are very mild so it doesn’t involve that much effort. The Golden Gulch is probably my favorite trail in the system. It has some nice views to start out with and there is some mild elevation change. That is different from most of the trails in the area which are flat with minimal change in the views. This trail is short and leads to homes which is the downside for this hike. Did this hike as an in and out. The landscape looked very nice, compared to my previous visit back in March. The Mesquite trees, which had looked like dead bramble had filled out, providing a surprising amount of greenery to what can be a drab landscape. The wildlife seemed to agree. I saw a herd of 13 deer enjoying the offerings.
