I went out to the lower Blue Range for the first three days of my spring break. The goal was to explore some more trails at the lower elevations that are usually too warm for me to get very far in on with the pups during the summer months. I hiked the AD Bar Trail on my first full day out there. I had been wanting to get back to this trail since a short excursion down it with the pups last summer. In particular, I wanted to make it to the cabin this time and push a little further down the trail to further explore a lesser traveled area of the Blue for me.

I remembered some trickling bedrock sections and dripping cascades when I hiked this trail in the summer, so I thought there was a chance for some light flow from the snow melt and some added scenery. My assumptions and more were confirmed shortly into the hike, as the flowing drainages below could be heard after descending only a few minutes. By the time I reached the canyon bottom the robust flow was evident. It was tough at times keeping the feet dry, but the going was smooth and the trail was in the same good shape that I had remembered. I made it to the cabin this time, but not much remained of the cabin, as it appears to have burned at sometime. Good trail continued past the cabin. It was hard to stop and turn around, as the scenery was not letting up and the hiking was easy. Nevertheless, I made the call after just over four miles in. We then returned the way we came with a few dedicated breaks to enjoy the flowing water and take in the beautiful spring day in the mountains.

I made another little trip to the Blue Range over the week. I visited the usual haunts with my pups and the girlfriend's extra pup and made another excursion into the central Blue to try a new trail.

I was able to take advantage of the cooler temps from the monsoonal pattern and were able to hike in 3 miles down the AD Bar Trail, in spite of its “lower” elevation trailhead of 7,000 feet. The trail proved to be a pleasant trail and was generally in great shape, plus there was trickling water near where we turned around, so that proved to be a bonus. We did not reach the ranch, or any structures like a cabin if there is one, as marked on the map and labeled on the sign. However, it could have been just another 500 feet up trail, but we had already hiked a mile past when I though we would turn around and I knew the hike out would be a little warm on the pups, so we turned around at three miles on the dot.

I am starting to see some potential in these central Blue Range trails that I have sampled this year, but they are probably trails that will have to be explored sans dogs, or at least outside of summer. I would definitely be interested in hiking the full length of the trail to the HU Bar Ranch and river some day. But for now, it was nice to draw another line and fill in another blank on the Blue Range map.
