Did this hike today starting from the West river trailhead. My Dad and Mark B. started at the cemetery and met me on the East end of the trail loop. Then, we hiked the Green trail to the bridge area, then took the North extension of the White trail back to the junction. My Dad and Mark B headed back to the parking lot, while I hiked the blue loop and the short yellow extension which isn't maintained as well as the other trails. These trails offer nice shade in summer however often times there are bugs.

Stats:
-------
round trip distance: 4.4 miles
AEG: 98 feet
strava moving time: 1 hr 38 mins
strava elapsed time: 2 hrs 12 mins

Happy Independence Day !

This time I started at the trailhead South of Whitehaven road on West River road. I hiked the main trail which passed by the Nike Base recreational area, continued on the green trail until I reached the East junction with the White trail. Then I took the white trail loop counter-clockwise back to the green trail junction. Then, I took the blue trails over to the Memorial/Cemetery on Whitehaven road to finish where my Dad was waiting. My Dad walked about 1.5 miles around the Eastern end of the trail system.

I hiked this loop with my Dad and we were limited on time. The temps were perfect but there were some mosquitos around. We could have used some bug spray.

After walking 5 miles from the back entrance of Beaver Island State Park to the start of the Nike Base trails, I walked along the Nike Base trails to the Gallogly nature trails (blue and yellow routes), ending at Assumption Cemetery. Saw a few deer in the woods. One deer jumped into the winding trail through the woods, was scared and ran quickly in my direction. When it was only 20 feet from me, it saw me coming around the corner so it made a quick U-turn and ran back in the other direction. Just one of those moments that I wished I had on video!

Around 10 am, hiked one-way with Dad and Mark B. from the trailhead starting at the Assumption cemetery through Nike Base park to West River road. Trails are very nice and there were only a few wet spots after some recent rains. There are a few bridge crossings over 6 mile creek. Starting temp about 59 but went up to about 63.

I did the one-way loop from the cemetery to the river. My Dad came along doing roughly a 2 mile roundtrip loop, then drove to pick me up near the river. If there was more time, I would have done a 7-8 mile roundtrip going back on some of the other trails. Temp was 71 degrees, 86% humidity. Overcast day. Extremely comfortable. Saw only one other person walking a dog the entire time. Also noticed that the town planted some new trees in some areas along the far Eastern parts of the trail.
