Wasn’t entirely sure I was going to hike today, but I woke up early enough for this one and it’s right down the road from the cabin I’ve been renting, so I headed out and got to the trailhead around 0800. Easy first couple of miles, then steeper last couple of miles. Most of the hike is in the trees, but the final 3/4 mile or so is clear and has good views.

Quick stop at the summit, then headed back down. Easy descent, but got a little warm for the final mile.

Crossing Grouse Creek was easy, the water was covering the rocks, but not too deep, so I just walked through the water both times and wrung out my socks after each crossing.

Only saw one other person all day, a guy picking huckleberries near the trailhead as I was finishing. Nice day, and probably a hike I would do at least a couple times a year if I lived in the area.

Got started around 0700. Not quite as much smoke as yesterday, but still pretty smoky. The trail dropped to Grouse Creek, which thankfully was not flowing too hard. Initially, it seemed like we were supposed to cross right where the trail met the creek, which we did, but then on the other side noticed we should have gone to the right a little more before crossing. Not a big deal today, but might make a difference when the water is higher. Once back on the trail, started heading uphill. The first couple of miles were pretty easy, basically a walk through the trees on old logging road.

Once the road shifted to a single track, the trail got a whole lot more steep. Prettier too though, more vegetation. There was also a small stream alongside the trail at about 2.50 miles which looks to have water all summer. The last two miles to the summit were much steeper than the first couple of easy miles. I especially liked the last half mile since the trees were mostly gone at that point, and had it not been smoky, the views would have been great. Kind of a neat summit, lots of natural walls of rock, mostly running north-south. Wandered around a bit, looking at the rocks (lots of quartz too) and trying to find some rock formation that supposedly looks like a strawberry. No luck there, but I don't have a great imagination, so nothing was looking like a strawberry to me. Saw five or six ptarmigans at the summit as well.

The hike back down was easy and went by quickly. I didn't really have high hopes for Strawberry Mtn, but it turned out to be a better hike than I had expected. The road in was in good shape, and is a pretty easy drive from Sandpoint.
