| partners | | Opted for an easy hike from the nearby Eagle River Nature Center, just about two miles from our cabin. Temps around 40 when we started, but no breeze, so it was pretty comfortable. I shed my light jacket within a half mile, but than wore a rain jacket for the off and on drizzle. Headed south on Dew Mound trail. The first part was simply walking through a forest, but then the trail started winding through some large boulders, which was fun. The clouds lifted a little and we started getting some nice views too. Dew Lake was small, but pretty, and the overlooks just above the lake had really good views, probably the best of the loop. The trail was steeper once past the lake, but only in short stretches of 30 or 40 feet.
Once we reached Eagle River at Echo Bend, we walked along the bank of the river and took a short break. After that, we headed north on Historic Iditarod/Crow Pass trail. Easy hiking, but lots of tree roots, and some rocks. We debated going down to Yukla Yurt, but decided not to. Just a few moments later, a large brown bear crossed the trail right in front of us. It was almost comical how instantaneously firearms, bear spray, and cameras appeared. I managed to get one good pic, even though I was holding my phone with my right hand (I'm left handed), before it wandered off into the trees.
Took a last look at the river at the Rapids Camp, the blue-green color of the water is beautiful, then the trail veered away from the river and headed directly back to the Nature Center. We saw quite a few other hikers on the final couple miles of the hike.
This was a great easy hike with a lot of views. I'm very glad I made everyone wear waterproof socks since the trail was very soggy in a lot of places--we were able to walk through everything in trail runners and still have dry feet. |
