| no partners | | Pink Panther peak is a challenging steep rock climb near the top, at least the way I went. I also came down in darkness which made the descent tougher than it normally would have been. My descent was not as steep and therefore safer than my very steep ascent.
Starting this hike around 6 pm, I followed a good trail for the first 1/3 of a mile leading to Panther wash, crossed the wash and continued for a total of 0.5 miles before needing to bushwhack to the low saddle North of Pink Panther peak. Once there, I ascended directly from the North side. The climb got progressively steeper and steeper until I appeared to be within 30-50 feet from the very top. There was a very steep rock section which I was able to climb because of irregularities in the rock. This climb put my limits to the test and luckily I had a good head lamp. While climbing up, I thought I wouldn't want to go down this way, especially at night. I made it to the top and by this time it was already dark. I looked around for a registry but didn't find one. On the way down, I thought I would find a less steep route, and I found it by heading East and then gradually circling back around to the North side. There were some really steep drop offs in different places, so I had to take my time going down, and find the "easier" route, especially at night.
After making it back to the saddle, slowly and cautiously, according to the topo map, I knew there was a road/trail about 500 feet Northwest of the saddle that led down to the bottom. I searched for this trail and found it after traveling a total of about 1.65 miles. Then, I took that trail to the bottom, across Panther wash, and then into another trail which took me South back to the trailhead.
By the way, in the Western sky, at 6:18 PM, near Picture Rocks, there was something that looked like a rocket in the sky. I took a few photos of it without even realizing what it was. Then, a friend of mine asked me if I saw it, and realized it was in my photos. Still wondering what this was... **UPDATE** - I found out this was a SpaceX launch. Go Elon Musk!! |
