| no partners | | I got to the Elephant head bike trail trailhead and started hiking at 9:40 am. At exactly the 1 mile mark, I got to a trail junction. The upper trail is the Quantrell Mine trail and the lower trail I believe is the Chino Basin trail. I followed the Chino basin trail, which is an old 4x4 road. I took this road down hill and after hiking a total of 1.7 miles I got to a sign that marked the Elephant Head Mill Site. The sign referenced some old adobe walls and I looked around very carefully but didn't see any walls or adobe structures here. About 7 or 8 years ago, I remember seeing the walls when I hiked in this area before. I'm interested in knowing what happened to those walls. Anyway, after hiking a total of 2.7 miles, I turned left on a road junction and followed that for about 500 feet. After that my bushwhack started. I bushwhacked up about 50 feet in elevation so I could see my destination better. From here I was able to see Yoas mountain. I continued Southwest and ran into an area with a lot of catclaw bush and ocotillo. I then realized it would be easier to head down to the wash to my right which appeared to be clear and easier to walk. Once at the wash I was able to make better time. I followed the wash for about 500 feet then started climbing up to Yoas mountain. I had to go around a lot of ocotillo but this side of the mountain didn't seem to have much catclaw. Once I got to the high point, it was simply a matter of following the curved ridge around to Yoas peak. At the peak, there were some great views of both Elephant Head, to the Northeast, and Little Elephant Head, to the Southeast. I found a registry at the top which I signed. The last person to sign before me appeared to be Paul C. in July of 2019. On the way down, I think I found a better route where I stayed in the canyon longer and avoided a lot of catclaw bush. On one branch of the canyon, I came up to a big drop off that I needed to hike around. But, the photos and views from that point were very nice. Once I made it back down to the road, it was an easy hike back. But, before heading back, I did some exploration further down the Chino Basin trail and on FS 4073.
Thank you to whoever did the trail maintenance on the Elephant head bike trail. This trail appears to be much better than it was in early October.
My AEG was 2133 but hiking only to Yoas roundtrip will be roughly 1923 AEG. |
