| no partners | | | For this peak, also known as Devil's Cashbox, I'm sure there are better routes that could have been taken. I started off taking the 4x4 bike trail (FS 4077) for roughly the first 0.5 miles. Then, I started bushwhacking Southwest up the slope. I saw two cattle which ran away from me as I got closer. There were some cattle trails that went 2/3 of the way up this slope which made this steep ascent easier. As I got closer to the rocky cliff, the brush got thicker. Then, when I got all the way up to the cliff face, I could see that the climb appeared too vertical and too exposed. So, then I hiked West along the cliff face to get around the cliff section. The next step would have been to hike South/Southeast to the saddle but looking up at the steep cliffs, I thought it may be best to stay low and hike to a break in the rocky cliff down lower. From that point, it was fairly easy to follow the ridge up to the top. From the peak, there were some nice views of the Whipple Observatory area to the West. I could also see all of the major peaks in the Santa Ritas, except for Mt Wrightson, since it was hidden behind Mt Hopkins. On the way down, I thought I could save a lot of time by bushwhacking South and East, but I believe it would have been a much easier hike down going West/Southwest. On my route down, there were some very steep rocky sections and I just needed to take my time. When I got down near the bottom, I could see the canyon and there appeared to be a steep drop for the final 50 feet of elevation change. I had to spider crawl near the bottom. I just took my time and finally made it down to the remote-looking and beautiful canyon. Once there, I hiked up the canyon, alongside the road, and then climbed up to the road. The bushwhack was tougher on this route than I expected. If I hiked this again, I would have stayed lower on my descent up and probably would have ascended up the West side or North side and probably would have returned that same way. |
