After hiking to Cuyamaca Peak (the second highest peak in San Diego County) in the morning, I headed over to hike to this peak (the county highpoint) in the afternoon.

I had purchased a permit online and had the permit in hand when I stopped at the ranger station on the way in. Only the last 0.8 miles of the drive were on dirt, and it was well graded dirt.

This turned out to be a nice hike -- the hike was entirely on a road that was some of the best tread that I have ever hiked on. There was scarcely even a pebble on it.

There was about 1,300 feet of elevation gain in the first 2 miles, which was a good workout. Thereafter, the grade lessened and there were some ups and downs through a coniferous forest.

The highpoint was atop a large boulder that required a class 3 climb. Actually there was a ladder and some nylon webbing attached to some bolts that I could have climbed up on, but I thought that it was a bit sketchy and more exposed than I liked. So I went around to the north side of the boulder and climbed up a minimally exposed class 3 route. It was a fun climb!

There was a concrete slab that someone had built on top of the summit boulder, with a space in the slab so that the benchmark was uncovered. There were some great views at the summit, so I hung around up there for a few minutes. Someone else was up there when I got there, and he said that he used the ladder and the webbing to get up there. I thought about going back down that way, but instead decided to descend the way that I came up.

I thought that this was a really nice hike, especially for a road walk.
