It begins by heading down a series of switchbacks, dropping 300' in the first 3/4 mile. At the bottom we crossed a wood bridge over West Sulphur Creek and began a 250' climb to the high point before dropping down 150' to East Sulphur Creek, which feeds the falls from the north while Mill Creek feeds it from the east. (The two creeks meet at the top of the falls)
When we reached the first viewpoint across the canyon we saw two girls wandering around the falls so decided to take photos on the return when hopefully they would be gone. (They never left, but at least they stayed out of sight when we passed by the viewpoint on our return trip.
We didn't spend a lot of time at the falls as we had another hike planned in the park followed by a dinner date at my sister's house, a 2 hour drive away. On the return trip I saw a doe and two fawns near the bridge over West Sulphur Creek. I took a few quick photos and videos thinking they may be gone before Tracey caught up to me, but they weren't in too big a hurry. They were camouflaged in the brush when she got there so I dropped down to the creek and flushed them out for her to take a few shots. Every time they stopped they blended in so well they were pretty hard to see in her photos. What would have been my best one of the doe was blurry because the focus changed to a tree behind it when it moved slightly.
Now just cross the bridge and climb back to the TH. Off to hike #2 in Lassen Park, Bumpass Hell. |
