Picked today to make my monthly visit to Chaparral Park. Using a bus/Lyft combination I arrived before sunrise so I was slightly chilly. No eagles this morning probably because Mark Koster was down at the Gilbert Riparian Area. Instead I saw Northern Shovelers, Pied Billed Grebes, Canada Gesse and the white Geese. Also a Great Blue Heron, Ring Necked Ducks, Mallards, Grackles and a Vermillion Flycatcher. Not a bad morning.

Enjoying a weeknight off I was able to get an early start on the bus ride out to Scottsdale. As soon as I got off the bus I spotted one of the Bald Eagles on a pole along Hayden Road. Got a few pics before she flew off. Next up was a chat with Mark Koster who mentioned that a few immature Bald Eagles have been stopping by also. Off to walk around a little bit. Right away saw a Vermillion Flycatcher, followed it around for a little bit also snagged a Mockingbird on the ground. Took pictures of American Wigeons and Ring Necked Ducks. Walked back to the fishing deck, met back up with Mark and another photographer. While sitting we spotted a Pied Billed Grebe that we had seen earlier. Both Mark and I went and trained our cameras on it and were rewarded with watching as it devoured a large crayfish. A good morning!

Having borrowed a car from a brother my wife and I made a trip out to Chaparral Park on a beautiful afternoon this past Saturday. As I walked around getting pictures of the Wigeons I spotted my quarry, a male Vermillion Flycatcher. I was able to get some of the best photos that I have ever gotten of this dapper little bird.

Time once again for the long bus ride out to Scottsdale where I hoped to see a Bald Eagle or two. Soon after arriving I ran across Mark Koster who was keeping an eye on Misty up on a pole across Hayden Road. So i wandered over and snapped off some pictures. Then I walked around the lake and came upon a pair of Killdeer. I know they show up from time to time but this was my first time seeing them at the park. Also saw a Mockingbird, Pied Billed Grebe, a Coot, Canada Geese and later a couple of Wigeons. It was a beautiful morning with the sun going in and out of the clouds. As I left the area Misty was still on the pole Having been there since about 6:30am and it was now close to 10.

With the heat having eased slightly today was a good one for the long bus ride out to Scottsdale. The cloud cover made it comfortable for a while. Saw the first Green Herons that I have seen in several months. Lots of Canada Geese at the park. An enjoyable morning.

Having a rare weekday night off last night I decided to get up before the sun and make an early morning bus ride to Scottsdale. I had heard that one or both of the eagles had hanging out there recently. I got off along Hayden but did not notice anything on the power poles lining the road. I wandered into the park and made my way around the south side of the lake and up into the park, then I noticed that there was one of the eagles on one of the poles along Hayden. I then ran into Mark Koster we exchanged greetings then I went around the lake to get closer to the road. As I was taking pictures someone told me that there was another eagle a few poles down. Sure enough there was. I went and snapped some shots of it. I went back around to the east side of the lake and met back up with Mark. We were directly across from where Bandit could be seen on his pole then Misty flew over and joined him on the pole. I did not have the energy to go back around the lake to get closer but managed to get decent shots with the zoom on my camera. Later they both flew off. Eventually Bandit returned with a fish he had grabbed from the lake and began chowing down. A great morning with some goslings and ducklings thrown in for good measure.

Time for another long bus ride across town to Scottsdale. As soon as I got to the park I ran into the geese and now bigger goslings. i left them and did my walk around hoping to see the Vermillion Flycatcher, no joy today. As I was walking a man asked me if I had binoculars in my hand, I told him it was my camera he then pointed out to me that there was an eagle on a pole on the east side of the park. Sure enough there was. Later I ran into a group of more recently arrived goslings.

Mark Koster sharing photos of goslings at the park motivated me to hop on the bus and head crosstown to Chaparral Park. As I entered the park there they were! Goslings and a pair of adults foraging on the ground. Later I got some shots of them in the water. Not a lot else going on wildlife wise. it was a beautiful morning to be out.

Time for another bus ride from Glendale to Scottsdale. Made it to Chaparral Park a little after 8. Right away In met up with Mark Koster. He invited me to ride with him as he looked for a Prairie Falcon that I guess had been sighted. We did not find it but did come across a beautiful Osprey before returning to Chaparral. We parted ways and off I went to see what I could find. I spotted a female Hooded Merganser and got some shots of a Pied Billed Grebe. I was hoping to see my old friend the Vermillion Flycatcher and I was not disappointed. That wrapped up my morning and it was back on the bus.

Since I had the week off for personal reasons I decided to see how getting to Chaparral Park by bus worked out. I live at Glendale and 54th Ave. so you do the math. Still cold when I arrived at about 8am. both kinds of geese present. Northern Shovelers were out. I was hoping to somehow see the Williamson's Sapsucker that had been seen at the park but I did not know how to go about finding it. Fortunately I happened on another parkgoer who had spotted it and was able to point it out to me. Yaaay!

Getting frustrated with my camera...too slow for birds in flight. Highlights are great blue heron and great egret. :y: My first time with great egret.

Working on getting to know my camera. So went to the park a bit late in the morning. Filled with ton of people. Couple of games going on. Later date, if I want to practice sports photography setting, this would be a nice place to come. I have read that the camelback park pond(south side of chaparral) also will have different types of aquatic fowl. So are the 3 small ponds on west side of Hayden. I walked to all of those ponds and I did see different sps :y: . Saw lots of weeds that would be host plants for butterflies but sadly saw no butterflies. Crossing the intersection is life threatening :scared: . A landscape truck almost ran me over at one of the crossings :o
One of the Canadian goose has a neck collar. I reported it on line. They are supposed to send me some tracking info. Will see if they do :)
I received a certificate of appreciation today(3/15/16) and it was banded by our az game and fish in carefree in 6/2010.

Had some time between two appointments downtown Scottsdale. Decided to go to chaparral park and practice water fowl photography. That area is very nice and cool. Nice place to go in summer before sunrise. Lot of people are fishing there.
Practicing point and shoot with my nikon. It is a beginner camera with long zoom. Takes a long time to focus. Not really designed for birds in flight. But, I still like it as it is light weight and helps me to keep track of wildlife I see. If and when I want to be a serious photographer (after retirement), I will get a different camera :D
Until then, I will enjoy Pam's and Gummo's photos of birds in flight :)
I also tried binoculars, but I didn't enjoy them. :(
