I've been up this small peak 5 or 6 times now and I never get tired of it.

Congrats to 14 yr old Kesean Terry for doing this hike like a pro. Maybe it was his 2nd hike ever.

Because the day high temp in Rocky Point this day was over 90 with humidity we decided to start this hike around 6.30 pm and finish before dark.

This is a great hike with a little bit of everything:
1. ocean views
2. amazing rock formations
3. some use trails and some scrambling
4. many possible routes to take
5. views looking down on the town of La Choya to the North
6. views of the small bay at La Choya to the North
7. views of Pinacate about 30 miles North in the volcanic zone
8. views of condos on Sandy Beach to the East

If you would like to rent my 1 bedroom ocean front condo on the 2nd floor of the Sonoran Sea resort, please write me a private message. Also see beachfrontmexico.us for more info. This hike is only a 5 minute drive from my condo.

Did another route variation on this nice peak right next to the ocean. Amazing views. From my parking location, I walked some of the sandy roads going West. Eventually the roads end and you will see various use trails. I continued until I went about 1 mile, then made a right turn and climbed up a rocky canyon which wasn't too steep. Eventually, I made it to the ridgeline. I walked the ridgeline and bit to the West just to take a few photos and see where it went. Then, I turned around, heading East. I took the ridgeline past 2 zipline platforms and then to the summit where I found a cross. I left a jar right near the cross on the ocean side, under a few rocks. I don't ever remember seeing a registry here but this nice peak deserves one. I continued East down the rocky ridgeline and eventually made it down to the sand again. Overall it was a pleasant hike but the rock can be
a bit unstable and brittle at times. If you take some caution, it can be a very enjoyable and safe hike. There is really no considerable exposure on any of the scrambling.

Driving directions: From the Sandy Beach resorts area, drive North then turn left onto Blvd. Paseo de la Duna. This road will take you to the town of La Choya. Continue until you see the Rocky Point Ziplines. Take a left onto a good sandy road after this business. At some point I turned my 4x4 on which is recommended to drive much further. I drove several hundred feet to get closer to the ocean but this isn't absolutely necessary because this can be easily walked. Park somewhere off the road. See my route for more info.

Knowing that there were some trails going all around this mountain, I decided to explore those today. I never expected the route to be over 4 miles, but it was. And it turns out that the total AEG is similar to hiking to the summit although the entire time I stayed at a relatively low elevation. There are excellent views of the ocean. It can get quite hot in May which is why I started this hike at 5:30 pm and finished before 7:30 pm, just before dark. If you are not interested in going to the summit, this is a great scenic hike that is mostly trail, and some sandy roads. The sand was packed down and not too deep in any area of this route. There are a few short loops near the North end of the route that are optional. The most enjoyable part of this route for me, was the edge that went along the ocean.

Note: I posted this route on the guide if anyone is interested in trying it.

Note: Other known names of this hill are San Juan Hill and Competition Hill.

I've been coming down to Rocky Point for over 10 years now. I always saw this hill and wanted to climb it. Today was the day. The sand dunes are a bit challenging. In the steeper sandy sections, you would take a step and slide half the distance back.

I started off by walking up from where I parked. Within about a minute the sand started getting deep and on the steeper sections, I was sliding back at least half of the distance of my stride. After several minutes of struggling through the sand, I thought it might be easier to get on the rocky ridgeline and climb UP from there. It started off well, but then got very steep very fast. After several minutes of climbing I realized there were a lot of ups and downs on this route. When looking to the East, I could see that the sand dunes were already quite far below me. I was already committed on the ridgeline. I just took my time on the steep parts and then when I got higher up I ran into what looked like a trail. The trail seemed to go back down into the sandy area which is not what I wanted, so I got back on the ridgeline heading up and I was only a few hundred feet from the high point. In this area, I saw some metal stairs leading up to a section of zipline. I continued higher up and perhaps at the highest point, I saw a broken metal cross. Then, at a slightly lower point I saw a small structure about the size of a dog house with a cross inside. I took some photos from the high point of the ocean and surrounding area.

At this point, the sun was setting and I needed to plan my route down. The ATVs and quads were down at the bottom and on their way out. This was a good time to cross the sand dunes to the Western side and continue down from there to where I was parked. I got down in 20 minutes, faster than I expected. I learned that descending through sand dunes is very fast, easy, and fun!

**Note: If anyone is in the area and would like to stay at my 1 bedroom ocean front condo at Sonoran Sea Resort, please see www.beachfrontmexico.info, or write me a message and I will respond as soon as possible.
