This was my second attempt at this small but mighty peak. A few years ago I tried it with no beta except for a rambling trip report from someone else who had climbed it with no beta. I couldn't make sense of it and ran out of time. This time I had a gps track from a trusted source (Susan Shih, see peakbagger) to help decipher the route. I still haven't seen a good description of the route I used though, so here's mine:

From the toilet, walk west and cross a wash. For least brushiness, stay south of the main wash and follow it to the base of the peak. Take the path of least resistance across the wash and work your way around to the right side of a blob of yellow tuff. Climb the ridge in front of you until you get back on another big swath of tuff. At the top of this, ascend southwest on broken rock to about 2800, then work your way south on ledges of varying width and quality - there are a few options. Eventually you will need to climb a broad sloping ramp covered with green lichen to the southeast ridge. On my previous trip I got near the beginning of this ramp but wasn't sure if I was at the right elevation to cross over the southeast ridge. It looks like the next level up could also work but this goes fine. After climbing the green ramp, ascend the southeast ridge as far as possible (not very) and then hike around to the south side of the summit block. You will see a large overhang at the start of the ridge and pass by another one on the south side. Then make an ascending traverse until you are below the second, and less obvious, low point in the summit ridge. A cairn marks this spot. Climb up to the ridge (again, a few options will work). Pass by a whole bunch of trash and turn left to walk up to the summit.

It's a short and very fun route that avoids slippery stuff for the most part. The summit has nice views of the rest of the Puerto Blanco range and the Ajo range, and of course the big beautiful green desert. But ugh, there is so much trash.

When I got back to the trailhead I ran into a couple of NPS volunteers in their 80s who have been cleaning up the park and doing their best to punk smugglers for the past 8 years. They seemed to get a real kick out of it. They said the pass west of Pinkley used to be called trash pass because of how much traffic it got and how much garbage was left behind. They had been to the summit by at least 4 different routes.

I was at my condo in Rocky Point when I thought it would be a good opportunity to do this hike provided that there was a relatively cool day. The high temp forecast for Lukeville was 81 for Wed, probably 10 degrees lower than average for this time of year. This was cool enough for me so I decided to go for it. I arrived at the picnic area parking lot around 10:40 am and there was nobody there. I used the GPS track from Mattias S. as a baseline. I didn't realize this hike was such a technical hike until after I ran into a few cliffs on the way up and down. It reminded me of a shorter version of Kino peak, which I attempted last month but couldn't finish because I ran out of time. This hike was shorter and I started earlier, so I knew I would have time to finish it.

Probably the first 1/2 mile or so, it was open country and relatively easy. Then, it got rockier and steeper. I had to cross a few washes in the first mile or so. A few of these washes were full of brush. Once I got onto the rockier section, I didn't have to deal with any more brush but it turned into a steep scramble and there was some exposure at times. I just took these areas slow. After hiking 1.65 miles, it was not apparent where to go, so I had to consult the route and explore around. After exploring I took the easiest looking route and it worked out fine. The last 0.5 miles before the peak was probably the slowest part of the hike. The peak had some migrant trash and it took me a few minutes to find the registry which was there but hidden pretty well. Many of the surrounding mountains had unusual shapes. I was able to see Ajo Peak but was unsure exactly which point was the summit. I looked in the direction of Kino Mountain and saw some familiar looking rock formations in the distance but wasn't sure exactly where that peak was located from this angle.

My original plan was to hike another peak in the Maricopa Mountains after this one, but there was simply not enough time. Extra time was needed on this hike because route finding was not so easy, even when I had another GPS track to reference. There are so many possible paths, but only a handful of really good ones.

Overall the hike was enjoyable and I would bet that bighorn sheep are active on this mountain at times.

Strava showed that my total moving time was 2 hrs 37 minutes which seemed a little on the low side.

AEG = 1,550

Having hiked Mount Ajo the day before, Tracie the Intrepid and I decided to do a couple of other hikes while in the area. We had intended to add in the Diablo Mountains High Point, but the hike to Pinkley Peak took longer than anticipated, so we just did Pinkley Peak and Arch Canyon.

We did Pinkley Peak first. We drove on North Puerto Blanco Drive and parked at the Pinkley Peak picnic area. Pinkley Peak is NW from the picnic area, so we headed in that direction through open desert. Going through the desert was fairly easy, but the fun began as we got nearer the peak. Route finding was a bit of a challenge, and the going was steep and very, very slippery. We managed to make our way to the precipice of the summit on the east side of the peak. There was no safe way that we could see to ascend from the east side, so we went around the south side of the peak and looped around the west side. Just below the peak we found an easy way to ascend to the summit.

We sat up there and took a break to enjoy the 360 degree views. Tracie decided to explore a bit on the peak, and about 50 feet or so from the summit, she discovered a cave-like overhang that had all manner of evidence of illegal activity in it: empty food cans, blankets, clothes, empty butane canisters, empty water bottles, carpet shoes, trash, etc. There was also something up there that almost looked like a makeshift solar panel, but it could have been something else. On the way up to the peak we had seen an occasional empty water bottle, but I was surprised to see so much stuff right on the summit.

We made our way back to the picnic area the same way that we came up. It was very slow going though, as the steep and slippery slopes were not conducive to fast hiking -- it took us almost 4.5 hours to do this 3.9 mile hike, although we did spend a fair amount of time on the summit.

After getting back to our vehicle, we drove on Ajo Mountain Drive to the parking area at Arch Canyon. We hiked up Arch Canyon on a pretty decent trail, and then took a social trail up to the Arch. The ascent to the Arch was a bit steep and slippery in places, but it was a piece of cake compared to hiking up to Pinkley Peak. We got up near the Arch, and we may not have known where the Arch was except that it was a sunny afternoon and we could see the sun shining through the Arch. We found a trail that we could descend and take to get inside the arch. The arch is huge, and we enjoyed sitting in the arch. I enjoyed the hike to the arch, and I would do it again.

The distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes is below. The stats above are the sum of the 2 hikes.
Pinkley Peak: 3.9 miles with an AEG of 1,604'
Arch Canyon: 3.3 miles with an AEG of 1,253'
