Did this repeat hike with Chris and Sheree and it was their first time doing this one. The Marana high temp was 109 today, while the Summerhaven high temp was 83. It was a bit humid but the trail was in the shade almost the whole time. It was a very pleasant hike.

I decided to ride my Harley motorcycle to the Sunset trail. The ride was great with only a light rainfall in the foothills area way down below. Traffic going up the highway was lighter than I imagined it would be on a Saturday. I met Ana there and planned on doing a relaxing hike and BBQ afterwards.

After hiking to Syke Knob and back, which was a great warm-up, we started going down the unmarked Bear Wallow trail. I believe this is what it's informally called.

There was some nice shade on this trail and we saw pine trees, fir trees, oak, maple, etc. Very close to the trailhead we crossed a bridge and turned left, then followed a stream which had some nice flowing water. After 0.75 miles we crossed under the highway, and kept going. This was a nice section of trail because all of the road noise went away. We eventually saw a few camp sites and some interesting models/art work. After hiking a total of 1.3 miles we ran into a road. Near the curve in the road, there were a few vehicles, and in the canyon above the road we saw some tent campers.

On the East side of the road, near the bend, there was a trail leading up toward Mt. Bigelow Rd. and some radio towers. We took that trail up which had some nice switchbacks and plenty of shade. After getting on Mt. Bigelow Rd. we turned left and continuing going up. We stopped at a high point / lookout area and stopped to have lunch. After that I noticed there was a dashed line on the topo map heading toward Peak 8146. I've been to Peak 8146 before but that time I did a steep scramble from the lower road. This route was easier and it was a new trail for me. We needed to use some route finding to get on the right track, but once we did, it was a pretty good trail that took us all the way to the saddle Southeast of Peak 8146. From there we only had another 40 feet of elevation to get to the peak. We looked for a registry but didn't find one. Then, we continued following use trails down to the road below and completed the loop of our lollypop route, getting back to the previous trail that we were on. I had a problem with my GPS device which drew in some straight lines in this area, but it was only a minor distortion. I wish I could understand WHY and HOW this happens. I'm not sure whether it's my phone or not having a clear line to the GPS satellites.

Anyway, it was a great day of hiking and I would have been fine with hiking 2-6 more miles. I'll probably do this same hike every summer when it's so hot in Tucson. The high temp for Summerhaven was supposed to be 77 on this day.

Stats:

Distance (round trip) = 4.8 miles

This small peak was along my planned 8.5+ mile roundtrip hike so I decided to make a visit. The Sunset trail is one of my favorite trails and maintained very well in most areas. Getting up Peak 8146 is an off-trail "open country" hike, but it should only take about 15 minutes. From the top, I was able to see the radio towers at Mt Bigelow, and from the North side of the peak, I could look out and see many lower points. From the North side, I could also see Oracle Ridge and Marble peak which is near the mining activity. On the way down I saw a cabin which must be on private property. When I got closer, it appeared to be locked up and not occupied. I hiked down the residential road and linked up again with the Sunset extension trail. I only saw 1 or 2 groups of hikers all day. Most of the other people were at campsites, or just sitting in chairs.

Strava moving time: 4 hrs 30 mins
