If you only have time for one hike in Torres del Paine NP and are not up for one of the more challenging/iconic hikes (Base Torres or the French Valley), this is the hike to do.

It was the last of our 4 hikes on our one-day tour of trails that are not part of the W Trek, which we would be embarking on the following day. And, as anticipated, the previous trails on the day built in excitement up to this point.

The trailhead is at Pudeto, on the shore of Lago Pehoe, which is the jumping off point for catamaran trips to Paine Grande--the traditional start of west-to-east W treks and long day hikes to the French Valley and the Grey Refugio.

There is a restaurant and bathroom facilities, as well as a good-sized parking area for visitors using their own cars.

The first stop on the hike is a dramatic overlook of the Salto Grande waterfall and cascades, which connect Lago Nordenskjold with Lago Pehoe. The striking color of the water adds to the natural attraction of the waterfall and is an easy stroll from the parking area.

Beyond the waterfall, the trail meanders along the southern shore of Lake Nordenskjold, even skirting a nice beach area before making a final climb around a knoll to the impressive Cuernos viewpoint, framed by the turquoise lake below.

When we arrived at the viewpoint, the Cuernos were covered in clouds, and it began to rain. We were a bit disappointed that we would not be able to enjoy the impressive views of these unique mountains, but we decided to wait it out a bit, while chatting with a few solo female hikers from the US and Switzerland, who had just met and decided to share costs for camping and a rental car.

After 20 minutes of rain and chatting, we decided to throw in the towel, and started our return. After getting about a half mile from the viewpoint, we turned around and saw that the weather appeared to be breaking. So ... we reversed course and hustled back in hopes of better views.

Our efforts were rewarded--and we had the viewpoint all to ourselves! The sun even popped through, and the remaining clouds made for nice photos. We were glad to have made the second effort!

Looking across the lake, we thought we spotted one of the campgrounds we would be staying at in the coming days on the W Trek. It turned out to be the Frances campground (rather than the Cuernos campground, which is where we would stay and is a bit further east).

The return hike was enjoyable, and we took in another view of the impressive Salto Grande before returning to the TH.

With a full day of hiking under our belts, we drove back to Puerto Natales in time for a late drop off of our rental car and time to make final preparations for our 5-day, 4-night backpacking trip through TDP on the famous W Trek!

Logistics/Getting there:
Torres del Paine National Park is located in southern Chile, about 150 kilometers north of Puerto Natales which is where we started our day. Several bus companies offer transportation to the park from Puerto Natales. You must get your bus tickets for the round trip in advance, you cannot (at the time of writing) buy return tickets once inside the park. The trailhead for this hike is Estancia Pudeto which is not as far in as some of the other sites. In addition to the bus, several bus tour stop here (although they generally stop at Mirador Salto Grande and don't go all the way to Mirador Curenos). We accessed this trail by rental car as part of a road trip through the park where we hit several spots. This is probably the best approach as the route is a short day hike and you can easily do another hike in the same day.

Fees:
The park entrance permit costs $32 (21,000 CLP) during the high season. There is no specific additional permit for this trail. Round trip bus from Puerto Natales varies but is around $30.

Navigation:
The hike to Mirador Cuernos del Paine is an easy day hike. The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, Mirador Salto Grande (a viewpoint over a large waterfall) is along the way. The trail can easily be done in two hours but it is so scenic you can easily spend 3.

Weather:
The weather in Torres del Paine National Park can be unpredictable, with strong winds, rain, and snow at any time of year. It is recommended that you dress in layers and bring rain gear and warm clothing, especially during the winter months. This hike in particular is subject to high winds. The first half mile has rock formations that channel the wind along the trail that effectively create a wind tunnel. There is a sigh with a dial indicating the wind speed at the trail entrance that is updated by the rangers. The wind in this portion is no joke, even at the moderate level hats and any sort of loose clothing becomes completely unmanageable and loosing your balance in a strong gust is entirely possible. I would not want to attempt if the wind is at the speeds indicated as dangerous.

Trail Conditions:
The trail from Estancia Pudeto to Mirador Cuernos is generally well-maintained, with some moderately steep sections and uneven terrain. There are a few rocky areas, mostly in the beginning, but in general this hike is low barrier to entry. Along the trail, you'll find opportunities to stop and soak in the magnificent surroundings.

General Comments and Musings:
The hike from Estancia Pudeto to Mirador Cuernos offers an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the captivating beauty of Torres del Paine National Park. The trail provides stunning views of Cuernos del Paine, Lago Nordenskjöld, and the Salto Grande waterfall, making it a remarkable day hike. It was on this hike that Victoria remarked: "Its hard to take a bad picture" a line that says more about the scenery than it does about my camera skills! This was a truly remarkable hike and gives astounding views in exchange for very little effort. This is a great way to whet your appetite for everything Torres del Paine has to offer.
