After coming down from Johnny Lyon Hills HP, I got back to the dirt road. From this point I was probably about 1,200 feet from a small house that I saw coming down from the first saddle Southeast of the high point. But, when I was on the road I could not see this house from here since it was blocked by hills. I looked up at Keith peak and saw several good routes. From here I walked about 200 feet West on the road until I saw a wash leading in the direction I wanted to go. I had to squeeze by a few thorns here to get to an open area. Then from here I saw some cattle trails which I followed South. I ended up following cattle trails that were just outside of a wash area and then zig zagged to get up higher. Cattle trails seemed to go almost all the way to the top.
When I was about 1,200 feet from the summit, I saw a barbed wire fence. I didn't see any private property signs anywhere and this fence looked rather old. There was a low spot to step over the fence or you could walk another 50 feet South to the end of the fence to easily go around it. Once past the fence I saw a good animal trail that continued South and went over some rocky cliffs to the West. In this area, I saw a group of javelinas that didn't immediately run away from me. I was able to get some video. When I got a bit closer they slowly moved away. It was already getting later in the day, so I climbed East and up to the top, finishing this summit. I did not have to do any rock scrambling the entire way. There were animal trails basically going all the way up, which made this hike pretty easy. On the way down, I ended up taking a different ridgeline which worked great. The hillsides were so open that I felt like there was no rush to get to the road. I actually cut some mileage off my route by hiking further West and meeting up with the road at a later point. There were only maybe 2 messy areas near the end when I had to cross 2 washes to get over to the road. Once on the road, I only had about 3/4 mile to get back to where I parked. Overall, I found the Keith peak hike to be very enjoyable. I'm not sure if this peak is on private property or not. But, if it is, BIG THANKS to the owners of Keith ranch for allowing us adventurous hikers to hike this.
Timeline:
------------
10:17 am - started hike at 2nd gate
10:43 am - turned off road after about 1 mile
11:05 am - crossed final wash before climbing up the steep slope to the rocky cliffs up above
11:30 am - reached rocky cliffs, found a "weak" area and started a steep climb up and through the rocks
12:31 pm - made it to the summit, took a long lunch break and several photos
1:30 pm - left the summit
2:43 pm - arrived at saddle to the Southeast
3:14 pm - reached the dirt road after crossing a few washes, started ascending Keith peak
3:50 pm - saw a group of 3-4 javelina less than 1,000 feet from the summit
4:05 pm - reached Keith peak, found and signed registry
4:30 pm - left Keith peak summit
5:07 pm - arrived at saddle about 1 mile NW of summit. There was evidence that cattle hung out here a lot.
5:34 pm - arrived back at road after a few wash crossings and following some ridgelines Northwest which seemed easier than hiking North to the road
5:50 pm - arrived at vehicle. Sun was just setting. Perfect timing ;-).
