Belated post. Last day in St Charles allowed for a one last visit to the Katy Trail. Hiked the trail along with the parks in the area (Du Sable and Frontier) as well as some of the trails that fed off the Katy Trail. Mainly, in the St. Charles area. Nothing too exciting. Just exploring in a little more depth some of the area that the Katy Trail exposed me to. The park walking was paved with open views. The side trails that led into the woods was more intimate and composed of a dirt (sometimes muddy) single track. These dirt paths were much more interesting and usually led to and/or paralleled the river.

Second day in St Louis allowed for another visit to the Katy Trail. The previous day I had gotten to Family Arena and so today I drove out and used the parking area at the arena as my starting point. This segment of the trail was much more rural than the St Charles part. Once I left Family Arena the trail quickly entered a wooded area that provided minimal distant views. At around .9 miles the trail went under highway 364. This was one of the few openings along the way, providing a connector trail to a parking area as well as one of your last views of the Missouri River. After the highway the trail continued to be surrounded by trees (with periodic sightings of homes) until about 3 miles. The trail then crosses a road and has farm fields monopolizing the views to the east. A thick forest still buffered the west side of the trail. There was some indication of elevation changes that were occurring off trail (the Katy Trail is very flat), but the trees pretty much occluded most of the sites. The trail hits the Green Bottom TH around 4 miles which I used as my turn around point. There is parking and bathrooms at this spot making it an ideal starting point for next visit. On the way back I checked out the connector trail near highway 364. The connector trail was about .3 miles long and there is plenty of parking at this spot.

Another nice stretch of the Katy Trail. There were a few bridges stream crossings, but with a few exceptions, little evidence of the Missouri River. There was a lot of trail activity (over the last two days) between highway 364 and St Charles. Once I got past 364 trail use seem to die down noticeably.

Visiting family in St Louis allows me to get early morning hikes on the Katy Trail. Picked up from where I left off on my last visit and started hiking south from Du Sable Park. Hiked to Family Arena before turning around. Nice way to get miles with little effort. Decent views of the Missouri River along the way. A lot of shops and history in the area if you have time to spare.
