We rented kayaks and went to Canyon Lake. The Acacia and Palo Verde parking areas were full, so we parked at the Boulder Recreation Site and launched our kayaks there. The sky was overcast, and we fought a fairly brisk wind as we headed north. There were a lot of powerboats, jetskis, and pontoons out, so we stayed close to the shoreline for the most part. Those in our group who had stand-up paddleboards were having some difficulty with the wind and the wakes from all the powerboats. The scenery was amazing, especially with the overcast sky. The water was warm.

We reached Russ Cove, where we got out and stretched our legs. There was some trash at the campsite, so we cleaned it up, then had some snacks and beers. My buddy was walking around just east of the campsite when we all heard a loud rattle. He was wearing flip-flops and had almost stepped on the rattler. He yelled and jumped back, as the rattler started to strike at him, then reversed direction in midair and slithered into the grass. The snake continued to rattle for over a minute afterward. Everyone was a little freaked out after that.

I headed toward the Point Campground Overlook to see the views. There was a well-defined use trail, and it was a very easy walk the entire way. However, it was VERY slow going due to snake concerns. The use trail was very narrow, was surrounded by very tall grass, and passed by numerous rocks and ravines where snakes could be hiding. I obtained a long stick, which I used to tap all of the rocks and to poke around in the grasses approximately 6-8 feet ahead. This paid off, as I flushed out 2 more rattlers on the way to the outlook. It rained for about 5 minutes as I reached the outlook. The views were excellent, especially with the clouds. I headed back, again very carefully, but didn't run into any snakes on the way back. The rest of the group was ready to call it a day. The wind was much calmer on the way back, but some of the powerboats and jetskis were coming in pretty close. We got back to the launch site, picked up the trash that was floating in the water there, and headed home for barbecue and more beers.

Spent the morning kayaking on Canyon Lake with my daughter. Overcast skies and almost no wind, along with very few boats on the lake made it an excellent day for kayaking. We saw some bighorn sheep, and took our time exploring various caves/alcoves on our way out to the Point Campground. Along the way, we docked and hiked up and over to the CG overlook, which is provides an impressive view of the lake and surrounding area with a 250 ft. sheer cliff. Great place to take a break and enjoy lunch and the veiws. After lunch we hiked back down and then kayaked around to the campground. Ran into Dolly the "steamboat" out with a tour. Campground was a nice spot. I'll be back for a kayak overnighter. Any time I get a chance to spend a day in the great outdoors with my teenage daughter is a great day!

Sure hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. I was out hiking in the morning and didn't have any plans for the rest of the day, until my hiking friend Susan invited Pat and I to come boating with them on Canyon Lake. Pat and I got to the lake early so we could get a hamburger & beer and spend some time with Shawn and Sophia at the newly remodeled Well Done Grill at the Marina. When Eric and Susan pulled up in the boat, we met them on the dock and climbed aboard for a relaxing afternoon on the lake.

Off in the distance, the clouds were building up over the Rim Country and added lots of drama to the sky that really enhanced the water trip through the canyons. There was lots of boats, jet ski's and kayaks out on the water with us but still lots of room to see the spectacular scenery. We kept looking for Big Horn Sheep that frequent the steep cliffs and finally we spotted some movement in a large alcove high above us. There was a large family group of about ten consisting of little ones to adults, even one dominant male sporting a large set of curled horns. We drifted on the water while watching the family easily negotiate the narrow rocky paths etched into the vertical cliff walls.

We kept an eye on the clouds as they built higher and higher, then well off in the distance we heard the rumble of thunder, with that, we began a slow return to the marina just as the wind kicked up a bit but, fortunately, no rain. It was a great way to spend the final day of the long weekend, with good friends, awesome weather and even the clouds to round out the day. Thanks again Susan and Eric for a fun day.

I showed my new kayaking partner this cool little destination durring his first lake outing. Had lunch at the overlook and watched some storms move through the area for about an hour. We managed to miss most of the rain. It ended up being a sweet day!

This was actually my third time to visit this location, although I have not been here for probably eight years. In eight years, it has not changed at bit. I was very pleased to see very little evidence of people. No trash, no footprints, and very pristine. That is a treasured quality for a location that is easily accessible. I really do love this spot. The sun is at your back in the afternoon and the views are memorable to say the least. I sat up there for well over an hour before coming down. It was nice to relax. I had a great day of paddling and hiking!
