Another foray into the LCR gorge below Springerville, starting at the roadside restrooms near Becker Lake. We were mostly following the old water flume, which was built in 1927 or so, to bring water from the little dam to the hydroelectric plant down-canyon. Due to brush and washouts, it is frequently necessary to walk along the riverbank, which is sometimes just fine, and other times is a scramble and a bushwhack. We hiked until we could see the roof of the old powerhouse (see [ Powerhouse Trail - Wenima Wildlife Area ] )

We sort of got lost a couple of times, trying to get back to the flume after we had started walking on dirt roads further down. It was fun to explore, because one road took us up to the rim of the canyon, giving us a nice view.

We didn't see any wildlife except for two geese flying south, following the river. We have a resident population here, but migratory geese also come through here.

It had been about 20 years since I last hiked down this canyon. I want to take a couple of friends here, and needed to make sure it was still as I remembered it. It's not an official trail, but there IS a trail. Part of it follows the old water flume that serviced the hydroelectric plant built in the 1920s. Part of it is just a cattle trail. There were no human footprints to be seen. There are a couple of tricky spots where you can't walk along the old flume, but have to climb down to river level, and climb back up again. The cattle have made trails to follow in these cases.

It's a really beautiful river gorge, but the overgrazing is a bit overwhelming. On the other hand, the cattle keep the brush mowed down, making it possible to traverse easily. It's not the time of year for the cows to be there, but evidence of them is everywhere.

I spooked up a great horned owl as I hiked. It flew away, no doubt unhappy I had disturbed its nap.

Looking forward to taking my friends there. We plan to use two cars, leaving one down at Wenima, and starting at the upper end, by the roadside restrooms (locally called "the million dollar restrooms.") I didn't walk all the way to Wenima. I just wanted to make sure the route was still passable. It is basically as I remembered it.

A hike with friends down the Little Colorado River gorge near Springerville, starting at the roadside restrooms. This May is unusually green. This time of year is almost always very brown!
