"It's Sunday afternoon: last chance to get out and do something", I thought. So I drove for an hour and a half to the New Mexican border over increasingly rough roads to explore a place that I had seen a few photos of online. Apache Box looked intimidating yet irresistible in the golden late afternoon light. I arrived at the bottom of the Box at sunset, in awe of the impossibly high cliffs. With only a short time to explore, I located the mine tunnels that were on the topo map, startled a bat, snapped a few photos, then headed back in the fading light. What I learned: 1) Apache Box is about as far away from the beaten path as one can get, 2) it is unique, beautiful, and worthy of its potential BLM Wilderness status;
