Second hike of the day after doing Black Mesa I opted for this "walk in the park". Talk about night and day..... I don't think I've ever been on a trail where practically the entire path was lined with stones. Hard to lose your way when that is the case. :) That being said, this was a nice little trail. The distant views are not going to "wow" you, but the trail interacts nicely with the landscape and the rock geology has some appealing spots.

Got on the trail around 9am starting from the Black Canyon TH as described in the write up. The trail starts right next to the BCT entry point and there is a new HIgh Desert Trail sign so it is easy to identify the TH. I walked in about 20 ft and the trail split. The trail does a loop so it doesn't matter which way you go, you'll end up back where you started. I went CCW. The trail is dotted with benches (10-12) which provide nice resting spots with OK views. There was a short side trail (less than .1 miles in length) called Kings Canyon Vista....the name was grander than the view :( Around .5 miles in I came upon the trail connector (it is not named, but both junctures are indicated with white poles). This bisects the loop and could shorten the loop if you are so inclined. I actually bypassed it initially and then did an "in and out" from the east side juncture. At around 1 mile I came to the High Desert Park(?)(Not sure if that is the actual name, but there are restrooms, a playground and a ballpark just off the trail. I imagine that this was the original TH for this trail. In fact there was a sign commemorating this trail to people who made this trail happen. There was also a ramada there with some trail and desert info.

Hike was very uneventfulful. Quite a few lizards, but otherwise I didn't encounter anyone else while I was hiking.

This trail is too easy not to do. Plus, it allows me to work off that Rock Springs pecan pie.

On the way back from Flagstaff I stopped in Rock Springs to grab a pie. Mmmm...pie... Oh yeah, I also hiked this trail. It's one giant meandering loop on the ridge between Rock Springs and the Agua Fria River. It's split into two sections, red and blue, and bisected by a yellow trail (red and blue don't make yellow, but whatever) to create two smaller loops. It's nothing to go out of your way for but it killed an hour of time so I wouldn't have to sit in north Valley rush hour traffic.

Ended up hiking this loop with my parents, thinking we were on the Black Canyon Trail. Certainly not worth the drive from anywhere.
