Originally considered biking end-to-end from the horse trailer lot on Cave Creek Rd., but Tatum Blvd. does not have a protected crossing. Well, 8 miles isn't much on mild terrain, so I decided to do two loops of the west end. As a bonus, I could do one camera angle on the first loop (handlebar, pointing right) and another on the second (chest, pointing ahead). It was cool, cloudy and breezy -- even at 1 p.m. Basically, I took the northern trails west, then southern W211S Trail back east to the Tatum TH. No one playing sports at any of the fields. No one on the side trails. Two hobos, two dog walkers, and two e-"bike" on W211S.

We ventured out to an area I had not been to before. Armed with a GPS track from the elusive and adventurous @BobP, we made our way into the unknown. The trail was tough to follow to begin, with the concrete sidewalk only a couple of feet across. This made passing the wild golden retrievers and small, non-speaking humans in wheeled vehicles, cumbersome.

The predominant flower out here is fiddleneck and whatever that little orange globemallow type flower is.

Fauna observed:
Killer ground squirrels, jackrabbits, quail, roadrunners and 2 mallard attack ducks.

The AEG was killer today.

This week's hike with my Grandson was limited to two hours due to family obligations. That included travel time to and from the destination. So we decided on a short hike in Reach 11 between Tatum and 56th St since it is only about a 5 minute drive from his home. After arriving we headed straight for the small pond which never seems to dry up even during extended dry periods. Where it gets its water is a mystery to me. There were about a dozen mallards cruising around and feeding on something below the surface which made for some photo ops. Then we circled through the dense forest of Palo Verde and what looks like Mesquite trees hoping to get some photos of other birds. The birds were being elusive but we did find a few posers. It was a fun time for such a short excursion close to home.

With my wife, I hiked out from the Tatum trailhead, past the frog pond, to 56th street, then completed the loop on the north side of the area. It was a cool, cloudy, rainy day with thunder. Lots of birds out, including some hawks. There were some huge pack rat dens over near the levee, as well.

With the day turning out nicer than I thought it would I grabbed my camera and headed to Reach 11 looking for some bird pictures. Managed to get a few with a Red Tail Hawk being a plus.

While waiting for it to get cooler I decided an easy hike was in order so I headed to the Reach 11 area east of Tatum. I had not been here in a very long time. So the gate and the concrete path were new to me. I took the path to the Barrier Free Nature Trail where I took it stopping for a few minutes at the little pond. going back to where the trail started I continued on east on the trail. I met the occasional hiker/jogger along the way. I turned around at the 1 mile mark as it was getting warm. It was an enjoyable morning and I was glad to get reacquainted with the area.

I did my regular mountain bike ride on Saturday and on Sunday I had a Canal ride planned. however, I've had Reach 11 on my radar for a while. I didn't know much about it, but I would see the trail head off of Cave Creek every time I drove out to Apache Wash trail head. I also noticed the trail off to the side where the 101 and 51 intersect and I thought I need to check this out sometime. I chose to go check this out rather than the canal. I was also hoping I could get more than 3-4 miles out of it, I wasn't sure if everything connected up. I managed to get 17.6 miles

I entered off of Cave Creek and I rode out to Tatum, crossed Tatum, did a big loop out to Scottsdale road and back. At Tatum then I made another loop back over somewhere near the 51, from there I just double backed up to Cave Creek. There is a cool area of tree tunnel lined trail near some water in there too.

This is easy going riding, but I had a lot of fun out here. If there is ever anyone out there who was new at mountain biking this would be the place to go, its wide, fairly smooth, and no elevation gain at all really. Would be a good place to start. Also, would be a good place to go if you had a gravel/CX bike.
