| no partners | | This was a great hike for December. I decided to post a route also since this hike didn't seem to have one. There were a few confusing areas leading up to the Arizona trail. Along the first 0.6 mile climb up to the first lookout point, there is Y-split, maybe halfway up, where you should take a left. There's a point when hiking along the lower part of the climber's section that you might feel like you hit a dead-end, but a faint trail does exist. Keep moving forward and you will eventually see a barbed wire fence where you will cross-over. Try to keep the black plastic hose in sight if you're unsure about where the jeep road is. There are a few areas where the jeep road is very difficult to see, especially the last 10 minute hike to the nearby saddle where you will find a large metal tank that was completely empty on December 11th. It appeared that this tank was no longer in use. A great place to have lunch is at the intersection of the Arizona trail at about 2.4 miles into this hike. There's a stream with some very nice shady trees. While coming down the Arizona trail into Molino Basin (between 4.5 and 5 miles into this hike) there are some great views of Airmen Peak to the Northwest.
In order to get back to the parking area, the more scenic route, but not for beginners, is Molino Canyon. When following Molino Canyon back down to the parking area (just short of 1.5 miles via the canyon), there are 2 tunnels you must take to cross under the road. About halfway through this canyon area is a junked car. I took a photo of the VIN # (still there) and will look it up. During this descent along the canyon, there are at least 2 steep areas which you can hike around. Again, the canyon area is not for beginners, and walking down the road (roughly 1 mile) would be the easier option, especially if it is getting dark by this time! |

We saw a few trees at the junction of the Arizona trail which had yellow leaves. These trees were only present near the stream. |
