Easy approach followed by some cool rappels with awesome views. As you leave forest road 213 stay high and work you way down at the last minute. This will avoid serious bush waking. The rappel sequence is as follows: 90',190',70',170'. FYI the third rap is chains DCR not the red webbing. The exit is now hiking up Fish creek hill to the rest area at the top. I recommend having a shuttle vehicle to get back to the trailhead. The road between the lookout and T/H was super busy. Not a destination canyon, but a great one to get some practice.

Not much of a canyon but a nice rappel down a waterfall:

R1=90 ft to alcove
R2=200+ ft (with 200 ft rope you have to do a bit of a downclimb)
R3=50-60 ft
R4=120 ft approx

Nice to see some friends I haven't seen in awhile, though my canyoneering skills are beyond rusty.

Went through the canyon once and got the rope stuck somehow!! Ended up shuttling back up and running the canyon again to recover the rope. Fun day!

was a cool trip got to play with my new mirco rack .There are new bolts on the first rappel that are closer but we still used 50 feet of webbing and a 2 foot sling for a personal anchor to get to the rappel anchors cause it is right on the edge. the wind was really strong on the second rappel my buddy went first and it took him 20 minutes to untangle the rope from the pull cord and then after I came down it got tangled again and it took us 40 minutes untangle it and to pull the rope .we ended up using the shorter rope for the 4th rappel witch was a mistake it wasn't long enough so we had to do a 5th rappel that was only 30 feet.

We intended to come out at Minnow, but ended up here instead. As it was nighttime, we didn't bother backtracking and finding the real route. Instead, Ben explored down the rope a bit and found some extra anchors... but seeing as we only had two ropes, nine people, what looked like over a 400ft drop before us, and no idea where exactly we were, some of us decided to hike it back out instead of possibly creating horrible congestion on an unknown route in the dark.

The four who decided to rap down anyway had a most excellent time. Unfortunately didn't do it myself, but there will be more opportunities! Sounds like one heck of a fun drop!

**Note: Brian's description is MUCH more accurate than the hike description. There are definitely four good-sized raps, not two.

This 'canyon' has been on my list since last winter but it was a matter of finding a canyon partner crazy enough to join me. :lol: In reality, the 4-stage 500ft cascading waterfall is VERY well bolted and much more scenic than risky as long as you're practicing good rope management. We parked at Tortilla TH off of AZ88 and walked south on the dirt road a quarter to half mile before taking one of the ridges east. Upper Zigzag has 2-3 shallow forks that come together and drop over the cliff in one HUGE drop. The drainages are rather uninteresting and bushy, so taking a ridge is the best way to approach. The top of the falls has two set of bolts but the best one to use is the one up on the fin of rock to the right of the falls LDC. The first drop is 50-80ft to an alcove with two more set of bolts. If the falls was flowing good, you'd get blasted or at least soaking wet while clipped in at these anchors while waiting for your buddy to drop down. The falls was lightly flowing today so my pants got fairly wet but that was about it... ;) For the best rope pull, it's recommended stop at the alcove, pull ropes, and re-rig for the next 200ft rappel down the angled slickrock falls. This is the biggest drop but it's also the easiest since you're just walking down a steep chute. :GB: The ledge below is big and plenty safe to walk along as the falls zigs like 50ft to the south. Once down rap2, pull ropes again, and use the close newer anchors to make rap3 of about 60-80ft to a large angled ledge. R3 is a ledgy dirty rappel since it's not down the falls and at first it's tempting to keep on going all the way to the ground, but to continue would be an even dirtier rappel in some thick bushes. So we pulled the ropes and walked them over to another set of anchor that puts you back into the line of the falls where the rock is much cleaner and gentler on your ropes. :DANCE: The final rappel is 100-120ft and drops down a dozen small ledges or so. Since I was the first rappeler, it was my job to keep on throwing the rope further down the drop. Funny that people climb that last drop since it looks like a barely class 5 ladder climb up the ledges. ;) Woohoo! Once down, pack up all the gear and some brief down climbing put you at AZ88 near Fish Creek bridge and hopefully you left a vehicle down here to get you back up to your starting vehicle. :D

Attempted this beautiful wall as a climb rather than a canyon.

Attempt #1
Zigzag Wall--I have looked longingly at this wall over and over and over! I wanted to climb it but I had no idea if it actually could be climbed. Just by chance I was with a canyoneering friend that told me he had seen folks on the wall before. Who knew?! After a a few conversations, some poking & proding I eventually talked Eric into joining me. This trip was planned to be a scouting day to simply verify the accuracy of recently shared beta. (thanks to Clint and Gene) Everything seemed to check out so we started the climb..................... unfortunately a massive monsoon grew right in front of our eyes so we had to bail before I even got to put a hand on the wall. Wet rock, wet climbing shoes, lightning are all a bad combo.

Funny how life "zigzags"! (ha) Certainly having a ZAG moment in life now...and looking forward to the upcoming ZIGS. Not trading any of my days---(except maybe that really windy one a few years back).... I loved the rain. This was a beautiful spot to get soaked. Can't wait to get back on the wall and give it another go!...soon

I'm also feeling compelled to thank those that have blazed the way before me. You all are certainly enhancing my adventures :)

After exploring upper Apache Trail Canyon, I crossed FR213 and misjudged how far away I was from the Tortilla TH and accidently dropped into the next drainage to the north of Minnow which I'm personally/jokingly naming Guppy Canyon. I soon realized I was in the wrong canyon since I've done Minnow before, but I was about halfway to the major drop off above Fish Creek Bridge so I pushed on to just check it out. There we're some shiny bolts up there with no webbing and looking at the drops from above and below, they look to be about 150ft & 100ft. But I only had a 200ft rope with me and figured I'd have more fun in Minnow and save this one for another day when I have a shuttle setup below to make it more worthwhile dropping down here. ;) So I backtracked a quarter mile and then climbed the ridge to the southeast and couldn't find an easy way down into Minnow, so I dropped down via a drainage and setup a rappel to get past a few of the taller drops and made it into Minnow just above where the fun begins. :D The boulder caves are always cool with loads of down climbing of course, though this time I was able to find slightly easier places to down climb. I spent more time exploring the caves this time and even practiced my ascending at one point. I still need to buy a 200ft pullcord, so for now I just rappel ~75ft to those midway anchors and do another ~75ft rappel to get to the bottom. Some more down climbing and you're at Fish Creek Canyon, though this time I stayed up and checked out those caves/alcoves near the bridge. I tried my luck at hitching a ride for 15-20 mins to no avail, so I just walked the road back to the Tortilla TH. It wasn't nearly as bad of a road walk as I thought it'd be, the views of Fish Creek Canyon are amazing, and it only adds about 2 miles and maybe 1000ft AEG to the hike. :sweat:
