Up via the 5.4 Headwall Route then on to the superb SE Corner route on the Monk - great setting, fun moves, impeccable rock. Also did a few laps on Sleazy Street - 9 bolts, easy climbing and a short crux but lots of small loose rock. Then up to the summit of Camelback for some quality cardio.

I got a new easy lead in along the Headwall on the way to the Praying Monk. I think we may have walked up it yesterday, but it only took ten minutes to get the rope out and run a line for Jackie. I think beta says there is six bolts to the top, but I only used four quick draws, its a pretty light climb, I did it with a big backpack loaded down with water, beer and coffee.

The Praying Monk is a fun climb with cool summit and I enjoyed it again. I led the route and then top belayed for Jackie as she followed and cleaned it. We enjoyed the summit with a fun couple, passed around a little wine and watched the clouds closely. Then it was the fun rap down. Jackie was not a huge fan of the hanging rappel, but I think its kind of fun.

On the hike out we were lucky enough to watch four BASE jumpers take some jumps. It was pretty spectacular.

Great anchors at top for rap.
After we climbed Pinnacle, we headed to Camelback for a trip up the Praying Monk. I did not realize there was so much climbing around Camelback. I led the East Face for my second lead of the day. It was an awesome climb and cool summit to hang out on. in fact, I would say one of my favorite climbs in my early climbing career: Easy climbing, but that exposure is something. After a small celebration on the summit and some beers we rapped down the other side. I got my first experience with a hanging belay on the way down to add to my list of new skills/experiences picked up on the day. Hard to believe today marks about two months since I took someone up on a random offer to go climbing.

Grad climb for AMC Basics course. Climbed up headwall via rope (unsure of route) and then hauled up to the monk. Was one of four students climbing. Didn't have any issues on the first ten feet, though the nerves kicked in as soon as I rounded the edge. Had one part halfway up that I had to stop and think about before committing. Overall it seemed much easier than the Sven / Magma days, though I could be just getting used to my climbing legs. Great feature of this route - at the bottom we were in shade all day long, made waiting for the first two climbers downright pleasant.

First 20 feet are the most difficult.
Fun climb up an iconic Phoenix landmark. We were a party of three: friends Jack, Ray, and myself. I am the youngest of the three, so up there old guys ruled! This was Ray's first destination rock climb and he nailed it. None of us had been up there before so we wandered around on the approach figuring out the right gullies to use to get up the canyon head-wall, wasting at least an hour. Nice free hanging rappel off the south side.

Good to finally get up there. Another one of those high places that I have been looking at for fifty years. Used to fool around in Echo Canyon as a teenager doing all sorts of foolish and memorable teenager things. Finished up with Mexican food and Margaritas at Los Olivos in Scottsdale, another place that I have been going to for over forty years. Ah, the memories.

Lovely day. Breezy, sunny, and 80s during the mid-morning with low humidity. A splendid day!

After passing the Monk several times on previous Camelback trips, we finally decided to head out and climb it. I can see why it's such a classic. Good climbing and well protected all the way up. Definitely worth doing at least a few more times.

Got off work early, and decided to get this last trip in before the year changed! Went up with our friend Will this time around, and did NOT forget the summit beers. :y: Beautiful day for this. Hung out up top for a little bit before coming down and back to the parking lot. Watched from the parking lot as a guy on one of the surrounding ridges walked on top of it... made me nervous; I wondered if he was going to slip and fall. Then suddenly, he jumped! Two seconds passed before I realized what was happening, and then his chute deployed. Very cool to see, but no one else in the lot seemed to have caught it. Probably his intention. Yet another great day climbing rock in the city. ;)

We went up last year, so decided that an annual visit was in order! James led this time around and I followed. It was late in the day and we forgot to bring summit beers, so rappelled back down before sobriety negatively affected our decision-making skills. On the way back down the trail, we passed a guy bouldering to the side of the trail. Might have to come back and check that out sometime!

Winter note: the perfect time to do this route is mid to late afternoon, as the sun will not hit the top until then! Brrrr!

Care must be taken to not knock rocks loose on your belayer the rock quality is poor .
Took this route to gain access to the praying monk . was solid route the crux feels much harder then a 5.6 but it is.

Tojo, James and I had planned to meet up with Claire, Rob, and Hannah and do some climbing out at QC. However, the road was closed due to an early morning fatality, so we turned back around and headed back to town. On the way there we decided to hit the Monk, since James and I had never been.

I "led" the first pitch, which apparently is just the Headwall route. I've scrambled up it before but Tojo was setting draws on the way up, so I figured I may as well start putting a rope through it. James had me on belay by the third bolt, and we continued upwards to the top. Tojo was there, instructing a family on how not to kill themselves. Public Service Announcement: just because you got a rope, two harnesses, and a set of draws for Christmas, does not mean you should assume you know how to climb safely. Tojo gave them a few pointers (such as, don't throw things from the top of the route, clip in so you don't fall, learn how to tie in.... etc.) and then we jetted off to the base of the Monk.. you can only take a person so far.

Tojo led the East Face, and James went second on a bight. If this counts as a multipitch, it's James's first one. He climbed it with ease and disappeared over the top of the face. While I waited, the family from earlier appeared and then watched as I readied myself and climbed up. The climb itself is pretty straightforward and fun. I met the guys at the top, backpack of beer on my back. We toasted and drank, then rappelled back down to the bottom. The two kids from the family were already climbing with some obvious backclips... we may have muttered something to them, but ultimately it's their decision. We rappelled down the gully and joined up with the trail to the TH. Celebrated at Boulders with pizza, tacos, and barleywines... great climbing days come with great appetites!

made it outside for a local friday afternoon climb instead of hitting the rock gym
low 70s and no one else climbing that we could see
john led the monk for the first time, i followed and we rapped down
then i led and john followed
this is a classic phoenix climb featuring good hand and footholds, some exposure, great views and a much different perspective of camelback than hiking echo canyon
a little windy and hard to hear each other on the top belay
forgot to bring my camera on the actual climb :(
thanks, john - had a great time :)

Taking advantage of Kelly's work schedule we were able to do this in town climb with no parking hassle or other climbers. We each led/followed to clean. My first lead of this classic which features some substantial exposure and a fun hanging rappel off. I also got to lead the head wall approach since Kelly did it last time.

Perfect climbing weather and great fun in short time (and no bees). Thanks again to my super climbing partner without whom I would be stuck in the gym

This was the last event in my week long celebration of turning 65 and still able to do outdoorsy things. Two days hiking and 5 days climbing with friends was the perfect week punctuated by climbing a Phoenix classic. Talk about luck, we had a parking place at Echo, clouds covering us while climbing and the climb routes all ours. Also picked up some beta from a group that had done three Gargoyle wall routes while we were playing on the monk.

The monk was the first real ourdoor climb of mine a couple of years ago. I remember almost nothing except being terrorified :scared: with the exposure and the "hard" moves needed. This time it was a ton of fun and the only issue with the moves was the questionable rock. One should not climb Mt Lemmon the day before Canelback since you get used to every pebble being bomber and every slab a wall of superglue....but I survived and nothing came loose in my hands. Not the same for the feet as the approach is marbles with ballbearings lubricated with sand :yuck:

As always Kelly was great to climb with :worthy: and her support priceless :thanx: .

rated 5.6 or 5.7 depending on the source
first time on the monk this morning
my only concern about this climb was the parking situation
met john right after work and we had the good fortune to find someone backing out as we pulled in
hiked up to the headwall and warmed up on a 5.1 route that gives you access to upper level
led the east face, although john was able to clip the second bolt, so the first part was on toprope
some exposure, and a little run out in a couple places, but not difficult climbing
super views at the top and a nice rap off the south side
pure fun on a phoenix classic :)
had overcast skies until we were off the route, then the sun came out and it heated up fast
looked around at some other routes then headed down
john treated for breakfast at another phoenix classic, the old brass rail
thanks, john - great to have done this one
right in town, too

I generally avoid Camelback because weird stuff always happens there and yesterday was no exception! After a half day at work, headed up to Praying Monk for my 2nd outdoor climb ever! We were at the first headwall route when a random man in a red jacket and santa hat came ambling up (of whom shall be called "Santa" for the rest of this triplog). Santa asked us if the Praying Monk was up that way. He had no climbing gear, no water and was wearing velcro orthopedic shoes, all of which caused me great concern when he began trying to free-climb up the wall. We all tried to dissuade him (I was scared he was going to fall and die right there in front of us) but he kept going despite our multiple warnings that there would be no easy way down. My group asked Santa again how he planned on getting down and when he responded with "I dunno" I realized this man was either a) insane or b) some kind of expert climber in holiday disguise. He kept going as my group had a perplexed discussion about our strange encounter with the man in the red hat.

We made it to the main wall where we found Santa again, along with two other friendly climbers who had just finished the east face as well. Santa asked me about the "funny shoes" (climbing shoes) we were wearing and again I was dumbfounded at how strange this situation was getting. The climbing commenced and we were buzzed twice by a police helicopter as 4 of the 5 of us made it to the top. Then a news helicopter comes rolling up and hovers there, filming us for awhile. I was to be the last climber up, receiving a top belay but the noise of the chopper prevented me from being able to communicate with the climbers on top. By the time the helicopter flew off, it was getting dark and we all agreed to call it a day.

The other climbers departed and kindly offered to assist our mystery Santa back down, but not before he got a little lecture about how lucky he was that there were other folks around to help him out. I'm a little bummed we ran out of daylight for me to climb the main wall but it was fun anyway with the bizarre Santa encounter and the news chopper. I definitely got some valuable experience lead belaying too and can't wait to get back out there.

Oh, and as for the news chopper... the footage they filmed was on the 10pm news as they did a little segment on the mystery Christmas tree on top of the monk. An all around amusing experience. :)

We rapped that SAR boulder a few times for practice, mostly for the gal with us. We climbed the harder variation this time and climbed up that 5.7 sleazy street to get up the headwall. :D
