 Slate's Day Off Toprope 5.10aSportG
Warm-up on TR. This is when I realized I probably didn't want to lead at all.
 Great Race Toprope 5.10d
Couldn't get past the crux. Tiny undercling to first knuckle with right hand, left hand to horn, try to find feet next time. Fun!
Life is good! My friend Teleah invited me to go North with her two friends, Paul and Stephen. Together they are the strongest outdoor climbers I have ever met. I've only lead outdoors a couple times, so I was happy to Top Rope on grades much higher than I'm used to.

Clouds and thunder all around, but it only rained for a 2 minutes total. Will be back to conquer these on lead in no time. On the way out we encountered a pack of maybe 15 cow elk. Went straight to Pho dinner.

 Back In Black Toprope 5.10c
Favorite route, felt like gym climbing past the crux. Go for the right jug after setting left foot around third bolt.

 Slate's Day Off Toprope 5.10aSportG
with a break in the monsoon, mike and fletch invited me to climb at isolation canyon
we were last here almost exactly a year ago
left the valley mid morning so we could climb the main wall in the shade
started with green lantern, a good long 5.8 warmup
moved around the corner to slate's day off, then everything's gone green, a nice trad crack
further down the wall we did arrogant chums, a 5.10b, perhaps my best climb of the day
mike led everything, fletch and i followed
this may be my favorite place to climb
as always, a fun day with mike and fletch
clear skies, nice enough in the shade
stopped at the thai restaurant on the way home :)

Green Lantern Toprope 5.8Toprope1 Pitch150 ft
with a break in the monsoon, headed for isolation canyon with mike and fletch
the main wall is in the shade by noon, making this a good place to climb in the summer
started on green lantern; did this one twice
went around the corner to slate's day off 5.10a
finished with arrogant chums 5.10b
mike led all three, fletch and i followed
climbed all of these two years ago
happy to get them cleanly even though i haven't been climbing outside much lately
beautiful setting on a ledge above pine narrows [ photo ]
perfect weather, and a great day with my climbing partners :)

Mellow Yellow Toprope 5.10aTopropeG1 Pitch90 ft
nice arête climb
Angel Wing Toprope 5.10bTopropeG1 Pitch90 ft
2nd pitch
haven't climbed outside in over a year :o
had an opportunity to get out with mike and fletch again, same place we climbed last 4th of july
no need to leave town early, as the main wall gets shade around noon
slightly different drive in due to access issues
high clearance needed
made the 1.14 mile approach through a wash, up on a plateau, down into pine narrows and along a ledge
not easy, especially with a pack full of gear and water
started with green lantern, a long 5.8 - good warm up climb, and a chance for me to get reacquainted with rock
moved to the center part of the main wall for everything's gone green, a 5.9 crack (trad)
next followed the ledge to the south - quite a drop off from the ledge, at one point there's a hand line for balance
angel wing is a four pitch climb, but we just did the second pitch, a 5.10b
i did not get this one cleanly, with a hang and a route finding error - next time! still fun :)
mellow yellow is a 5.10a that follows an arête
some nice exposure with a small roof
mike led everything, i did all climbs on toprope, fletch had a great lead on angel wing and followed the others
my leading days are probably over, and i greatly enjoy the harder climbs (for me) on toprope
three new routes for me
felt good on the rock after so much gym time
need to refresh on some of the other skills, like cleaning the anchor and efficient rope management
had a great time in a beautiful setting with great partners
weather held one more day - pleasant enough in the shade with a breeze
any objections to posting the approach route?
also have a track for the drive in

 Kestrel's Last Stand Toprope 5.10bSportG1 Pitch110 ft
Arrogant Bastard Toprope 5.10bSportG1 Pitch110 ft
mike and fletch invited me along for my first visit to isolation canyon
beautiful setting :)
the approach goes up onto a plateau, then drops into the canyon
the main wall is accessed via a ledge with a pretty good drop off
from the north end of the main wall, could see up into pine creek narrows
chumley's [ photo ] shows the ledge
started with green lantern, a long 5.8
moved to the center wall to climb slate's day off, rated 5.10a
then two challenging climbs on the south wall, both 5.10b
sent arrogant chums, but had to take a short hang on kestrel's last stand
good sequence of difficulty, good sample of routes
mike led all four sport routes, fletch and i did everything on toprope
loved the rock and the setting, and can't wait to come back for more
saw showers move around us, got a few sprinkles, heard thunder a few times
thought we might get hit on the hike out, but just missed the storm to our east
very humid, but the main wall is in the shade
had a great time in a new place

This was a quick Monday trip to Isolation Canyon. Scott is here from Australia, to travel the US and to climb at the best places. I had to show them Iso! Mike was working so it was Patty, Scott, me and of course Greta. (note: Do not take dogs here)
I have made a public statement that I have TR'd Vitamin M enough times clean it was time for me to lead it... So, that was the plan.
I didn't realize the rope could be so hard to manage around my ankles. Every position I got in; I realized the possibility of a fall with a flip upside down, was inevitable. I didn't climb with the grace and confidence that was required to complete this climb... I screamed and fell, but I got back on and I finished it. I realized I don't lean in with my hips enough on lead. I need to move with as much confidence as TR.
Then Scott said to me as I came down; "As long as you are having fun, right?"
Maybe, I am trying so hard, I forget to have fun?!

Goal #1: Climb 12's
Goal #2: Have a fantastic time doing it! (or any other climb) :)

I don't care for this climb, it was okay on TR but I don't need to lead this, felt awkward.
••••• Vitamin M 5.11cSportG
It was our warm up so I decided to TR it. Should have lead it, but it's much easier for someone to clean as the TR it.
••••• No White Flag 5.12aSportG
FINALLY got on this climb, HARD but I loved it! Holds so good it didn't let go of my right hand as I fell over and over on the crux, Bled all over the climb..
I finally showed Mike this area. It is a bit cold on the Main wall but I really wanted him to feel the awesome feel of the horizontal holds and the roofs. We met Manny up there, he is a really great guy who set most of the routes and is writing the guidebook. Despite Manny's recommendations to climb at the other walls in the sun we went to the main wall. Mike onsighted (climbed clean first try without knowing about the climb) All of the climbs, including a classic 12a "No White Flag" I liked the name of that climb and refused to give up on it despite bleeding all over it. : rambo : A good day trip, even with a late start.

I believe you can do a second pitch on this route, but we just toproped the first pitch. Manny mentioned that he recalled the first pitch was the harder of the two.
This was the end of a great weekend of climbing, thanks for the invite Hikergirl81, I met a bunch of great people. Other than the winds and sandblasting at Jacks, you couldn't beat it! Iso is definitely a good area, and the holds are big enough for me to actually climb them cleanly! Juliachaos is a natural climber...great meeting you, I can't wait to see those photos!

Camping here was much better than at Jacks! Pretty much no wind, and I was pooped enough that the howling hounds didn't bother me. We all set up camp and then settled down for dinner and mallows around the campfire. It was a really enjoyable night getting to know people and talking about hikes we'd all done or were planning to do. Hit the sack early and slept well because my tent wasn't bashing me in the head every ten minutes!

Breakfast was equally enjoyable. Sausage, bacon, eggs, and blueberry walnut pancakes! How can you go wrong? We scouted out for the trail to Iso and then went on our way. The hike out there is nice -- great views and fun terrain. It was hard to follow the trail at times but fun boulder hopping and scrambling on the route. It ended up being fairly windy down there though, and though the sky was a beautiful blue, the sun hid behind the largest clouds almost constantly.

I ended up hopping on Vitamin M, though it's well above my skill level. I love the challenge though, and took my time trying to feel for the best routes and trying out the beta from others. Didn't finish it completely, but I'm happy with where I got and definitely surprised myself on how far I actually made it. Took the rest of my time down there watching others alternately struggle or breeze up the same route. Very cool experience.

Upon arrival at the car, I dove into the cooler and pretty much finished off the contents. Think I ended up eating about 3500 calories that day between the big breakfast, huge lunch, billions of snacks in between, and the kabob at the end of the night that was the size of my drumstick. Not to mention the 2.5 glorious pieces of AJ's pie I helped polish off later on. Climbing takes a lot outta ya!

Great weekend, had tons of fun, and can't wait to do it again! :y:
