went up to jacks canyon with fletch and mike for the day
haven't climbed outside in months :o
that's just wrong
started on swiss wall, trying to stay in the shade
did three routes i've done before and made it up swiss miss with a take and a slip
wandered over to casino cliffs, where we did two short routes that fritzki told me about:
edge your bets - 10a
slots o fun - 10a
backtracked to cracker jack for a few more fun ones:
betty cracker - 9
you don't know jack :pk: - 9
snap, crackle or pop - 9
mike led everything, fletch led almost everything, and i did all routes on toprope
by about the fourth route, started to get the feel of rock again
weather held out, just a few bugs, good temps in the shade, only two other parties out there
saw evidence of the jack fire
thought about johnr1 a lot, as this was one of our favorite crags
got to climb some harder stuff and six out of nine new routes
had a great time :y:

wandered over to swiss wall, where there are three climbs that i've done on top-rope
decided to try leading the easiest looking one
made it up, but it's still a project
was happy that i felt like leading a nine
thought about doing it again on top-rope, but was done pushing the envelope at that point
weather was nice as could be, john is a great partner, had just an perfect day of climbing
it's a lot of fun to see both of us making progress

Camped at Jacks on Saturday night, then woke up Sunday and headed into the canyon with the group. We started at Casino and did a few climbs there. TR'ed on Mickey again, and with how warm it was, I was glad it wasn't on lead. Went out to Swiss Wall after for some shade. Started with Brie and Bleu. I forget which is the one on the right, but that one was so much nicer! A bit of a heady lead right below the anchors though. Again, glad I TR'ed everything today as my head wasn't in the game. Then Feta and finally Yarlsberg, which is a super fun 10a.. I need the guts to start leading these things! In the meantime, entertaining myself by cleaning and rappelling the routes -- so fun!

Finished early afternoon and then drove back to town for delicious Boulders pizza and a Mother Road Black IPA (yummm), and some trivia. What a weekend. :)

Out for another day trip with some friends. We started at Casino Cliffs with the 5.8 Ante Up. I've forgotten what an awkward climb this actually is, until comparing notes. I slipped on TR on this one, after heading left when I should have gone right, and ended up in the pointy agave plant at the bottom of the climb. No worries though; I got back on and took the correct route this time, making it to the top without any further blunders. I then cleaned the route and rapped down. Momentous occasion because of a fear of heights I've been trying to work through. Still pepping myself up for that first lead, though.

Walked down to Swiss Wall after that, to tackle a couple other climbs. We ended up only doing the 5.9 Feta, but it was so much nicer than Ante Up! It seemed like it was going to be awkward at first, but a couple unchalked holds made themselves available just at the right moments. Fun, short climb. Cleaned this one as well, and it didn't even have much for footholds at the anchors. A little more heady due to that, but took a breath, double-checked everything, and took my time. Rapped down and joined the others at the bottom. It was nearing 5pm at that point, so we packed up and headed out of the canyon and into Pine, for dinner at the Rimside Grill. Everything enjoyed their meals and desserts. Bonus that it's a dog-friendly establishment, so we could bring our new puppy along as well. Great day all around!

Trip cut short by a leader fall resulting in a sprained ankle.

Other than ending on that sour note, it was great weather and climbing up til then, although I wasn't finishing all the routes.

Thanks to the EMTs who helped us carry our buddy out of the canyon.

Kelly and I went to Jacks to meet up with the Phoenix Rock Climbing meet up which was hosting an ASU graduation event at this popular sport climbing venue.

We arrived at about 9 and the overnight folks had just started to climb. half were on the Casino but we opted to join the folks in the shade of the Swiss wall. Kelly climbed all three of the moderate routes while I got thrashed by Yarlesberg for the third time. So I climbed Gouda twice as a make up.

After climbing with the group, we ventured off so I could show Kelly all of the walls in this part of Jacks. We led sinker in Crackerjack, Sunday stroll (5.7) in high life and finally gumby on the Casino wall. We finished up at 5 and headed to food and home.

perfect weather with clear bule sky, light wind most of the day and mostly high 70s.

It was very rewarding to complete some projects from last year. And it was really enjoyable to lead a climb that I couldnt even top rope 6 months ago.

I have to admit that this one was really about the destination (the top) more than the journey (the climb)

Came up with some friends who'd never been. Finally feeling better from all injuries and illnesses! Started on Feta as a warm-up, then did Yarlsberg -- fun! Ended on this wall with Gouda, which was my first outdoor climb. Very fitting. 8) We left here for Cracker Jack, since it was way too cold in the shade.

First outdoor climb.. woo!

Four of us met up in Phoenix on Friday evening and somehow managed to squish about four trunkfuls worth of gear and supplies into the back of the Subi. Always fun to start off a trip with a good game of car Tetris. Eventually we got out of town and made the long windy drive up to Jacks to camp the night before climbing. They weren't kidding about those wind advisories; it pretty much took a group effort to get the tents set up so that they didn't blow away.

Saturday morning I awoke to find myself buried in the surrounding terrain. My tent doesn't have the option to close up the mesh windows so everything outside blew in. The tent was bucking madly and my gear didn't weight that much, so I bailed on it and broke it down with the help of some alarmed passersby. We all tossed our tents in the back of the car and then hiked into Jacks, fingers crossed and hopeful that wind doesn't know how to make its way into canyons.

First climb: Gouda! I find that highly appropriate, considering my infatuation with cheese. :D Next up were a couple 5.10a's and then a 5.8 (Ante Up) that I actually had more trouble on. All climbed out at that point, I took a nice long walk through the canyon to check out the dry creek and as many trails as I could find. The canyon is pretty rife with them for the climbs, but they don't go very far. I returned in time to watch Janelle bust over a roof, but lost my sunglasses in the process. Luckily when I noticed they were gone later on, they were pretty easy to locate. Think I'll be installing a system of bungees from now on so that I stop losing things (ie - headlamp, lens hood, lens cover, etc!) every time I step outside.

Had a great time at Jacks climbing with Janelle, Steve, and other such wonderful people! Was very glad though to get out of there and out of the wind and sand to the peaceful camp spot near Iso...

Spent another weekend climbing up at Jacks Canyon with a large group of loose friends who were there for a B-day party. Half the people in the canyon this weekend I recognized from the Phoenix Rock Gym. It always suprises me how small the climbing community actually is. :)

Most of our climbing was on Casino Cliffs & Cracker Jack, but we also got a few in on Swiss Wall and a quick one on the Main Wall. The weather was perfect considering how concerned we were about it being too hot. As long as you chase the shade and bring plenty of water, it's actually quite comfortable. :bigth:
