After a morning hike in Sandys Canyon, followed by some Pickleball and frisbee at Bushmaster Park in east Flag, we headed back to the Sandys Canyon TH--this time with our climbing gear for some rock climbing. We hiked over to the climbing area, arriving around 5 pm with the hopes that climbing traffic would have died down.

Not sure how many were there earlier in the day, but there was still a good number of climbers out--and I realize that afternoon is the preferred time here, given that the east-facing climbs are shaded in the afternoon.

In any event, I hadn't been there before, and really wished I could have gone with someone who knew the area better. I had done some research online and wanted to clime Mr. Slate, but it seems everyone else wanted to do that one as well.

So, after asking a few folks for suggestions for a good top-rope climb (we didn't have quick draws with us), we headed over to the Sun Tower area. Not sure if we were actually at the Sun Tower, but we found a nice spot to set up a top-rope belay. The kids and I took a turn rappelling down, and then we climbed the route.

It was probably a little more difficult than our present skill level, but my son got to the top, and we all had a great time.

By the time we packed up our gear, and headed back, it was past dusk, and the we used our headlamps the final 0.5 mi. to the TH.

Just as we had started the day, our car was the only one at the TH. So, we opened it up and shut it down on the same day. :)

Capped off the day with takeout pizza from NiMarco's :y:

 Barney Rubble 5.10bToprope1 Pitch60 ft
 Fred Flintstone 5.10bToprope1 Pitch55 ft
second visit to the pit
this time with mike and fletch
mike led all routes, fletch led the first one, and i did all routes on toprope
started with these:
popeye meets the burrito master, 5.9 55', mall wall
mr. slate, 5.10b 70', swiss tower
pleasant dreams, 5.9 70', son tower
bluto tastes an olive, 5.9 60', mall wall
finished with the two listed above
popeye is a little pumpy for a warm up
came off on my first attempt on mr. slate's roof and had to start over
got it on the second try, with a rest below the crux, so not clean
had done both of those routes on my first visit here with johnr1
the next four were new to me
had the most trouble on bluto, pulling a bulge at the top
fred and barney were a lot of fun, overhung with huge pockets and some stemming
took once on barney and got fred
fun to do some harder stuff, new stuff, and get three of the routes clean
always a good day out with mike and fletch

 Sunshine Daydream 5.8G
I got pretty frustrated this trip. James, Richelle and I met up with Adam, Liz, and Mike up at the Pit. James put up Sunshine Daydream (listed as a 5.8 here but a 5.7 on MP.. my rating was a 5.Fthis). Richelle TR'ed and had a great time! Her favorite route so far, and the tallest one she's done. Probably the most scenic, too! But then I got on to lead and found it to be too heady above the ledges. Everything was run out because it was "easy." I eventually got up to the final ledge, so I was standing a few feet above my last clip (and the ledge below it), and a few feet below my next clip. I felt totally insecure, and when I went to clip the bolt, it was a half inch out of reach! I tried for a few more minutes but then nerves got the best of me. It was too scary to downclimb to the last bolt and bail, so I walked around the ledge and off the route. (There's another climbing area here which is all dirt at this point, so this wasn't a crazy move or anything.) Untied, pulled out a bunch of slack and tossed the end of the rope down to James so that he could put it back up again.

It took a few minutes to calm down before I decided to downclimb the dirt/rock "trail" to where James and Richelle were waiting. Belayed James up the route and then TR'ed it. Even sloppier the second time around. It felt a little better but I was still super pissed and didn't want to hang around that route any longer. Cleaned it and we went to Way Gone Wall to join the others.

James put up a 10d (Secret Agent Man) and set up TR for one of the 12s next door. I TR'ed the 10, which proved to be much more fun than the first route of the day. I had to hang on the rope several times, but it felt pretty good.

Turned out to be a pretty short day. Went to both Historic locations for a bit of beer and food. Got back into town late and slept really well.

 Not Your Average Joe 5.10a
Fun day. Stuffed six climbers into James's truck (James, me, Tojo, Shane, Aaron and Richelle). Drove up to Flag and had a good day of climbing! James, Richelle and I started at the Upper Tier. James and I each led Skirts Up Pants Down (5.8 ) and Richelle TR'ed. It's her second time climbing, so I stayed up above and took pics while she climbed. Then we headed to the shady side of Sun Tower. Can't believe how hot it's already getting. The rest of the guys joined us for a few while we played around on Not Your Average Joe. James set it up on TR, climbed it, then Tojo and Shane each led. Then James led it and did great! I tried it out on TR and was super pumped just a few feet off the ground. Love this route, though.

The other guys left at this point and projected some other things while James put up chums Son. I TR'ed it and James decided to have another go at leading it. The bolts aren't super obvious on this one, so he'd sat on the rope for a moment to figure out where one was his first time up. Second lead he did clean. Overall, a great day of climbing for everyone. Finished up and had some food and drinks at Brews n Cues before heading back down to the Phoenix oven.

After running, we went to the Pit for some fun TR'ing with Bob, LL, and Toni. Everything was great until the mosquitoes came out full force! We packed up quick and ran out of there, ending up at a couple breweries in town before heading to the BLM for some camping.
