had declared no playdates sunday so i could watch olympic track & field
when i found out mike and fletch were going to the pit, invited myself along
got up there around 9:00 and found there has been a new parking area established for the pit and sandy's canyon
just a quarter mile west of the old one and clearly signed
you can still park near the campground in the lot nearest the road, but limited spaces
only a 3/4 mile approach
i've never seen so many people climbing there; perhaps perfect weather had something to do with that?
grabbed popeye (5.9) for a warm up climb
next up was mr. slate (5.10b), which i got cleanly for the first time - very happy about that
this climb has given fletch fits, and she got it on a second try at the roof
next, mike & fletch wanted to try true value (5.11a), which features a difficult roof pull
all of us struggled on the roof, with fletch having the best technique
i made it up, but it was ugly
moved over to sporte (5.10c) on the white wall
this one has a smaller roof, which i did not get cleanly, having to take
better style on finishing this one
good technique, and it's doable next time
two new routes with some harder stuff
warm in the sun, but had a little shade in the afternoon
just a great day to be up there :)

 Fred Flintstone 5.10bToprope1 Pitch55 ft
second visit to the pit
this time with mike and fletch
mike led all routes, fletch led the first one, and i did all routes on toprope
started with these:
popeye meets the burrito master, 5.9 55', mall wall
mr. slate, 5.10b 70', swiss tower
pleasant dreams, 5.9 70', son tower
bluto tastes an olive, 5.9 60', mall wall
finished with the two listed above
popeye is a little pumpy for a warm up
came off on my first attempt on mr. slate's roof and had to start over
got it on the second try, with a rest below the crux, so not clean
had done both of those routes on my first visit here with johnr1
the next four were new to me
had the most trouble on bluto, pulling a bulge at the top
fred and barney were a lot of fun, overhung with huge pockets and some stemming
took once on barney and got fred
fun to do some harder stuff, new stuff, and get three of the routes clean
always a good day out with mike and fletch

fun roof pull
first time climbing at "the pit"
tagged along with john's meetup group
wasn't sure what to expect, so it was nice to have the routes set for us
everything today was on toprope, but there are a few things we could lead next time
started with sunshine daydream, 5.7 75 ft
moved to blackboard (i think) 5.8-5.9 25 ft did this one twice
next the classic popeye meets the burrito master, first pitch only, 5.9 55 ft (twice)
finished with another classic, mr. slate 5.10 70 ft
cool place - limestone with pockets and jugs - fun climbing
saw a little rattlesnake spending the day curled up in the rocks
weather was wonderful with maybe a high of 75-80, cool breezes, clouds building then moving on
storms threatened but we didn't see any rain except for a few miles on the drive up
missed the big storm in the valley
burger and fries at bun huggers, then john sprang for pie on the way home
fun to see john climbing well
good times!

The Pit is a climbing wall that you can access at the Canyon Vista TH. We hiked Sandy's Canyon the day before and wanted to explore this part of the canyon and maybe watch some rapping in action. Nobody was on the wall however so we explored on our own. We did not expect to find a route to the top without needing ropes, gear or the know-how to use them (which we really don't) but we did. Wasn't too hard either. Perhaps a little steep, but we never felt exposed and a short ascent. The trail is just a few steps east of the climbing wall area. I will upload a track but know that I did forget my gps unit so from the beginning of the trail to the top of the wall and where it connects to the Walnut Canyon/AZT 31 is my best guess and so it is hand drawn.

Once at the top we skirted the edge of the cliff checking out all of the views, all of them beautiful. Then headed back to the to where we topped out. We first came up, we had spotted a small trail heading north. I wasn't sure but I had a hunch that this might fulfill our wish of getting closer to a scenic rock wall area we spotted yesterday from the Sandy's Canyon trail. Sure enough this little trail turned out to be a connector trail to the AZT 31. We promptly followed the AZT 31 north.

Pretty soon it begins to descend into Walnut Canyon. As it does you get some really excellent views of the Kendrick mountain and Humphrey's peak, a sight I knew I had to put in a triplog but I have since read it somewhere else too.

Once at the bottom it was kind of a repeat of yesterday's hike but we at least we got a little closer to that beautiful rock wall and all it's wonderfully odd textures. To mix it up a little we decided to do the Fisher Point Overlook this time. It started getting a little hot and we were pretty sure we were going to be disappointed for our efforts but we continued all the way to the top. Wow! Was it ever worth the hike. Excellent views.

We headed back after lunch via Sandy's Canyon.

After plans changed again, and again, and again due to the wind and other factors, some of us decided to go check out the Pit. No climbing for me, but that didn't mean I couldn't hike in and take a nap while everyone else did all the work. ;) The wind was ridiculous! Since I was busy checking the back of my eyelids for holes, didn't take many pictures until right before we left. Cool area; I'd like to come back sometime when it's not so windy.

I put on my harness 2 times this trip once to TR an very "technical cruxy climb" It was in the 5.10 range so I figured, How hard can it be? It was intuitively easy for me. I heard few others say I climbed with so much confidence and grace.
Wow, I haven't heard this before maybe I always feel like the underdog because I always hang out with such strong climbers. Today I was the strong climber...
This got me thinking, perhaps I just need to change my perspective.

The wind was ridiculous I took advantage of the shorter approach and packed in lunch and a few beers. The second time I put on my harness, Joey had asked me for a very attentive belay for a climb he was projecting. There were a few areas he could have decked so I gave a very specific belay. To keep him from hitting the ground, my plan was to jump backwards off a cliff to take in slack quickly. Luckily he didn't fall. All in all it was a fun little day trip to Flagstaff's favorite outdoor gym, The Pit.

••• Popeye Meets the Burrito Master Lead 5.9
I was in my head a bit for this onsight but I made it work. Too many choices for me though. Confuses the blonde in me.

I was supposed to be on the classic EASY warm up Popeye meets the burrito master but she told me the wrong climb.. whoops! I got permission to bail but decided to finish. I did get in my head a bit. Falls on ledges?
