Great day on the Munchkinland crags with my buds Frank, Mike and Bob, but windy. The gps track takes you from the parking lot at the end of Rose Canyon Rd ($9.00 day entry fee; you can walk from Catalina Hwy., but that adds nearly 3 miles and some elevation) to the base of "The Towers". Mtn Project has some more details on routes, but they are all well bolted with chains at the top and a good variety of skill levels. We did, from left to right from the chimney, all the routes from Miss Gulch (New Chimney Route?) to Ding Dong. All are good, long (nearly 100 ft.) routes with something for everybody. Probably the most fun was the chimney which requires lots of stemming. The lead, though, requires a long reach as the bolts are well to the right of the chimney line. There is a good aerial photo showing all the nearby walls on Mtn Proj.

Didn't see anyone on this Friday.

I'm not sure which climbs I did, cuz Mark couldn't remember the names of them. :? But I wasn't feeling well at all, so I only did about 3 or 4 routes.

 New Munchkinland 5.4 Lead 5.4
The name of this one is "The Good Witch"
 Ding Dong Toprope 5.5
There's No Place Like Home Toprope 5.9
Day one of our climbing weekend. Woke up early, got on the road to Tucson and pulled tiredly into town. Refilled our energy with Bruegger's Bagels and headed up the mountain.

Liz, Adam, and Tyler all met up with us at Rose Canyon. We walked the road and then followed the trail hidden behind the bathroom to Munchkinland and Towers. I led The Good Witch, which was enough for me for one day. I TR'ed Ding Dong right after, then took a bit of a break watching James, Adam, and Tyler all siege Poppies Will Make Them Sleep. Meantime, Liz put up There's No Place Like Home. She finished and I TR'ed... still gaining strength, so had to hang a few times on that one. The guys managed to alternate enough times to get within six feet of the anchors, but it wasn't enough. James put up a bail 'biner and they called it a day. Climbing Lemmon slab is ROUGH, especially when you're not used to the style. Kudos to those guys for trying, and major kudos to Liz for finishing No Place. It's a land of tiny fingers and foot smears, and not a whole lot else. Fun when you figure a sequence out though, especially without falling.

The Norby's invited us on some climbing practice in the Catalinas as part of a canyoneering loop down Sycamore Creek and then back up Rose Canyon. Early in the loop we stopped off in Munchkinland for the climbing and did some of the easier climbs on the wall...Ding Dong, New Munchkinland, New Chimney Route, and attempted Dark Side of Oz (Joel was the only one who conquered this climb). After relaxing at the wall we headed down Sycamore Canyon and traversed a nice rocky section of pools before heading back to the TH. Great area....can't beat the Catalinas :)

Took K&K on a favorite short hike with climbing in between. I only managed 2.5 climbs before I tweaked my bum shoulder. Karl bought us ice cream at the confession stand at Rose Canyon Lake when we were done. I won't talk about the two ice creams he had....

Fun day! Maybe we're ready for our GC trip???

both john and i have some time off this week, so what better use of that than an overnight climbing trip?
decided on mt. lemmon and john reserved a campsite at rose canyon lake
hit the road right after work and were on the towers by mid-morning
although more crowded than i've seen it, we were able to climb what we wanted
two easy warm ups, then three good moderates on sticky granite
did the last one on toprope after john reconfigured the anchor
on the hike out, checked out another wall around the corner and scrambled up some cool rocks for a great view
just in time to see showers and some thunder and lightning move in
nice campsite
rained off and on all night
well worth it to save a trip back to phoenix and be able to climb the next day

Day one of a weeklong vacation/birthday celebration. We drove down to Mt Lemmon and checked into the campground before heading off to Munchkin land. There were quite afew other people at the towers but we were able to get the routes we wanted and climbed all day.

Hiked back but stopped to explore the wall on the back side of Muchkin. A few routes but no where as nice as towers. We also summited a formation that is along side the climber trail. It has been on the to-do list for a while and glad it is out of the way.

Made it back to camp area about the time the weather became threatening. Rather than set up in the rain, we drove up to Sumerhaven which was pretty much closed for the day. But by the time we got back there was enough clear weather to set up and cook dinner (thank you Kelly). Hikers bed time and wonderful cool night with intermittant sprinkles. (116 in Phoenix - got to love it)

escaped the 115 degree day in the valley by heading up mt. lemmon with john
he had picked out an area known as the towers, which is part of munchkinland
here's a link for the area:
http://www.mountainproject.com/v/the-towers/106124408
looks like the data base on haz is from rockclimbing.com, and the beta on the towers is mixed with munchkinland and a little out-dated
mountainproject.com has more current info, for those of you interested in moderate sport climbing
this was an excellent choice for the day
shade early, and some cover provided by trees and clouds in the afternoon
easy approach, longer climbs, and a beautiful setting
started with two easier warmup leads, then moved to lullabye league, which has a difficult start
next attempted a chimney climb in the shade
the beta says stay in the chimney as long as possible, but i couldn't reach the bolts to clip doing it that way, so i moved to the face
one of the mountainproject comments says that the face is closer to a 5.10, and i believe it
made it up, but it was ugly
did this one again on top-rope staying in the chimney, and that felt a lot easier, just as the route was intended
took a snack break after that little project
led two more climbs on the second tower, finishing with a nice long 5.8 on an arete
all of the climbs were well-protected
had just a perfect day up there, with plenty of climbs we could do, and only a few others nearby
one gal belaying her husband scared me a little, so we kept an eye on her
gym to rock is an adjustment - it has been for me, anyway
have really enjoyed getting outside with john so often this summer
had dinner at el charro afterwards, which is quickly becoming a favorite
thanks for an awesome day of climbing, an excellent meal, and great company, john

How do you survive the 115 degrees in PHoenix? Head for the hilles (or mountains) which is what Kelly and I did. Climbing on Mt Lemmon is a challenge as the ratings are stout and the Tucson climbing community "old school" However, the environment is great with the temps at mid mountain in the low 80s, lots of shade and clouds providing shade but not lightning.

See Kelly's trip report for the climbs. She was amazing and led all six. I almost had to drag her off the crag so we could eat as she wanted "just one more" This from a person who had worked since midnight! It all caught up when the firjoles and tacos kicked in and she slept almost all the way home.

This was my first time leading on Mt Lemmon and it took some getting used to. The rock is deceptivly grippy and my old eyes took some getting used to finding little nubs to plant a foot on. But as the day progressed, the nubs grew and so did my confidence. I think the last lead of a 5.7 was my most challenging to date. 90 feet of steep face with a few odd features was fun. Getting off line twice led to a couple of breath-holding traverses. This was very ssatisfying since one year ago I couldnt even climb this route on top rope. Guess old dogs can learn new tricks

Great fun, great food and great company. Thanks for the inspiratiion and solid belay Kelly.

Walked in my fivies since they're the only shoes that don't hurt over to Munchkinland to meet up with juliachaos & co. My feet were screwed from yesterday's hike, so I had to play it by ear, but this was mostly for Mark to get out climbing. I figured I'd just sit & socialize & learn something if my feet wouldn't stuff into the climbing shoes. They allowed me to do 2 routes. Being a beginning climber, the 2nd one was really hard, and I wanted to give up several times, but stuck with it. I even fell off once, and guess what? I'm still alive!!!!

Day 1: Went to an area called South Park which is up under the observatory. Warmed up on a 5.10 of some sort, but wasn't really feeling the climbing, so just belayed for a little while. We grabbed food at the Sawmill Run. Excellent dinner, and even better dessert. Bread pudding smothered in cinnamon for all! Camped near Bigelow that evening -- good free camping spots off the roads there.

Day 2: Wall of the Marching Munchkins, and the Tower. TR'ed another 5.10 there, then another one much later. The second 10 of the day was just my style -- a little technical, and very bouldery! The day was hot and so was the wall, since it was in the sun, so headed into town and had some beer and mac n cheese pizza at Nimbus. Yum!

First trip climbing the Mount Lemon area. PRC Meetup brought more than a dozen folks and we climbed mostly on the Tower wall next to the Munchkin wall which included Good Witch (led), Lulaby League twice (7+), Which old Witch 6+ As is typical the climbs wee a lot stiffer as this is an older area. The routes also tended to be long so you got plenty of rock time.

Near perfect weather day as the wall gets a lot of shade in the morning and then we had cloud cover in the afternoon. The climbing here is very good as the rock quality is excelent and grippy. It took a while to figure out that a small feature would grab a foot and hold it. This was even true on the Good witch where the climb to the last bold was over a bunch of wet rock - just what I needed on the first lead/climb of the day :scared: However, it turned out to be no problem. The real challenge was finding hand holds and a lot of pinching was going on.

This wall is a short walk from the Rose Canyon campgrond making it very nice for those who could camp. It was alittle stiff making it a day trip due to the long slog through the Old Pueblo. The upside was dining at El Charro on the way home and filling up on green corn tamale and carne seca with a friend.
