The second, especially since I was in the northeast end of the valley was to do some trails/areas that I hadn’t done before. The first was Pinnacle Peak. This was to be the main hike for the day.
It had been awhile since I last visited this trail and as I was driving out there I was thinking of it as the “forgotten, red-headed stepchild. With the McDowells and the McDowell Sonoran Preserve so close I thought the demand for this trail may have diminished. Not the case. Got there at 6am and the parking lot was already half full, with more cars coming in behind me. (When I left the lot was full and cars were lining the street). I didn’t push myself too much, but the “ups” still had me puffing. The trail was in good shape and easy to follow. I feel like they’ve extended the end. I remember, (perhaps incorrectly), that the trail officially ended when you reach the bottom on the west side. Now it ends about .2 miles further when it reaches the road.
Side notes: interested to see that the fairways for the surrounding golf course is being allowed to yellow. It is being maintained, it’s just not getting any water. There were 100 emergency markers in the two mile stretch. The trail had a number of info signs about foliage and fauna. It was unfortunate, due to the drought, most of the foliage were just brown twigs and it was really hard to differentiate one plant from another when all you were seeing were brown twigs. This trail is not the “forgotten red-headed stepchild” that nobody wants to see. Rather, it is the Prom Queen that everybody once to be in the presence of. Despite the crowds and surrounding homes the trail is worthy of repeat visits. A good workout, with a trail that engages nicely with the landscape and offers great views both near and far. |
